Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
POET has announced an agreement to acquire Green Plains Obion, a bioethanol facility in northwestern Tennessee, increasing the company’s production capacity by 120 million gallons and improving its access to southeastern markets. The transaction is expected to close in this quarter.
With a new owner coming for some of Claire’s Holdings’ assets as part of its bankruptcy proceedings, the Claire’s and Icing jewelry stores in The Empire Mall have survived another round of closing announcements. They are not listed among almost 300 locations that will close.
Cafe Breadico has opened on the west side of The Bancorp Building at Cherapa Place. The restaurant at 345 N. Reid Place from the owners of Breadico features pastries and sandwiches – all made with sourdough — and an espresso station. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Vern Eide Marine has acquired Soo Sports. The business at 85th and Western has moved to the Vern Eide store at 4501 E. Arrowhead Parkway, which is now called Soo Sports at Vern Eide Marine.
The new Doggy Den Suites at 3520 S. Gateway Lane features bedroom suites for overnight stays. Boarding services also include traditional kennels. Ann Anderson’s business also offers day care services. She has worked with dogs for 25 years, including owning a similar facility in California.
Crosstown Vinyl has moved across Eighth Street to a space in 8th & Railroad Center. The new address is 401 E. Eighth St., Suite 105. The store, which is owned by Steve Zastrow, buys and sells vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes and books. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Brandon McCormack has taken over Sioux Falls Food Tours from owner Dana Wohlwend. The general manager of Ironwood Steakhouse started working with her as a tour guide in 2021. Tours run weekly from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, with private events and corporate outings available too.
A downtown restaurateur and a growing distillery are joining forces to expand at Cherapa Place. Harvester Kitchen by Bryan is moving to The Dakota Flats building and rebranding as HK. Chef Bryan Moscatello also is moving Nunzio’s Food Hall, which operates within the restaurant in the Harvester Building but will have an enhanced presence and expanded menu in the new space. BlackFork Farms, which is near Brandt, will open a retail shop and tasting room for its spirits in the new space at 310 N. Reid Place. The plan is to open by the holiday season.
CJ Schwan’s has opened a regional office in the River Centre at 200 E. 10th St. The global cuisine company is building an Asian food production facility at Foundation Park in northwest Sioux Falls but will base 50 to 100 staff members at the renovated office downtown. The space features a commercial kitchen designed to host sampling events for customers, including large retailers like Walmart and Costco.
The owners of a barbecue restaurant in south Sioux Falls are opening an adjacent business that will craft charcuterie boards and floral bouquets. Platter & Petal is the creation of Jess Jones and her husband, Ryan Gaede. The two opened The Smoked Culture BBQ & Brews at 3400 W. 49th St. two years ago. Platter & Petal will offer pickup and delivery, and there will be seating for customers to enjoy nibbling and a drink or to participate in build-a-board classes and other events. While the space likely won’t open until late fall, Platter & Petal will start accepting charcuterie orders through The Smoked Culture on Oct. 1.
The new Bride to Bride Wedding Co. is a consignment store at 408 S. Cliff Ave. that sells wedding attire, offers event guidance and rents out bigger items such as furniture, specialty linens and arches. The store also has new inventory. It’s open Monday through Saturday.
Photographer Alycia Estwick has started Estwick Gallery in Lennox. In addition to her photographs and the work of other artists, Estwick sells furniture that she refurbishes. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday.
The owners who acquired Spring Creek Golf Course earlier this golf season now have taken over management, with plans for upgrades and a new name. Fore Score will keep the 18-hole course southeast of Sioux Falls as a public course.
A locally owned shop for vintage, new and used clothing, furniture and home decor that also takes consignments has opened at Lake Lorraine. Urban Thread is open Monday through Saturday at 2564 S. Lorraine Place.
David’s Bridal is closing after the national retailer decided not to renew its lease for the building at 4004 W. 41st St. The final day will be Oct. 26.
Locally owned Jack Rose Social Club is expected to open its second location in Sioux Falls sometime this week. The restaurant, bar and video lottery casino is on the first floor of a residential and commercial building that also includes a parking ramp at The Steel District.
National Halloween stores have reopened for the season in Sioux Falls, and both are in the same locations as last year. Spirit Halloween is at 1431 W. 41st St., and Halloween Express is at 2721 W. 41st St. Both stores are open daily.
A locally owned franchise for Colorado-based Fat Shack has opened in downtown Sioux Falls. The restaurant at 401 E. Eighth St. along the boardwalk at 8th & Railroad Center serves sandwiches loaded with ingredients like chicken fingers, french fries, onion ring and mozzarella sticks, along with burgers, wings, chicken fingers and more. It opens at 11 a.m. daily, closing at 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
Drybar has returned to Sioux Falls with a new franchisee. The salon that specializes in blowouts and styling services closed in April 2024 but has reopened in the same space at Empire Place, a retail center at 4101 W. 41st St. It’s open daily.
