Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
A franchise location for Snooze Mattress Co. is coming to the Empire Place retail development on West 41st Street. The store will carry major brands and uses 3D sensor technology to help customers identify which sleep system will best optimize blood circulation, alleviate pressure points, regulate body temperature and activate neutral spinal alignment. It’s expected to open this fall.
Makers Exchange has delayed its expected timeline for opening to September. The locally owned business under construction on the northwest corner of the Tea exit on Interstate 29 will lease space to about 70 vendors to sell their locally made merchandise. The building has been expanded to include a café, which initially was going to be part of a second phase.
Boston’s Restaurant & Sports Bar has opened in the Ramada Waterpark at Russell and West streets. It’s open daily, starting with breakfast, and has a full liquor license. The restaurant and “team room” are filled with about 50 TVs. The menu includes the signature Boston’s Pizza and a large selection of bar food, along with steak, salmon and salads.
Eastside Emporium, which sells vape and tobacco-related products, also features a growing section of snacks and candy imported from counties throughout Europe and Asia. The business at 4721 E. 26th St. is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
A new food truck in the Sioux Falls area this season is the creation of Polish immigrants. Lukasz and Ewelina Bronikowski of Brandon have started Heavenly Food. The menu features Polish and American favorites, including handmade ground chicken burgers, Polish sausage, pierogies and hand-cut fries.
Locally owned Turbulent Games is adding a second location. The store at 1914 S. Sycamore Ave is expected to open soon. The east-side shop will focus on trading cards and board games, and the store at 5010 S. Marion Road will offer expanded space for miniature and role-playing gaming events.
Boss’ Pizza & Chicken in Sioux Falls has a new owner, allowing the founder to dedicate more time to expanding the franchise. Jeremy Seefeldt sold the central Minnesota Avenue restaurant and the delivery outlet at 26th Street and Marion Road to Ryan Bitterman.
Sara and Shea Geelan, owners of Dialed In Nutrition, have purchased Sioux Falls Chef, which sells prepared meals and desserts. They have renamed the business at 2210 W. 69th St. Dine Meals. For now, the shop offers grab-and-go meals; online ordering will be available once the website is ready.
Garage Clothing has opened at The Empire Mall near the center court. It’s a Canada-based fashion retailer carrying apparel and accessories with styles that appear to be designed for teens and young women.
A franchise location for Redline Athletics has opened in Tea. The gym at 2325 Enterprise Ave. offers multiple classes a day for youth age 8 to 18, focusing on strength and conditioning. Camps also are available. Training sessions for adults in the morning will be added soon.
AA Temperature Controlled LLC, which does business as A&A Express, has shut down operations. More than 100 employees working at or reporting to the Brandon facility, mostly truck drivers, were laid off. The company also works with about 140 independent contractors and 20 additional employees nationwide. It started as a family-owned business in 1945. The most recent owner was private equity firm Laurel Oak Capital Partners, based in Boston.
After design and construction delays, crews are busy turning a former rental space for sports in Harrisburg into a family entertainment center. The owners of Air Madness are creating Union Social, which will feature bowling, axe-throwing, arcade games and a restaurant in the attached space. The targeted opening date is Oct. 1.
A new business in Dell Rapids, The Local, features handcrafted items from 30 makers in the area. The shop at 503 E. Fourth St. is open Thursday through Saturday. It’s owned by Alice McGinnis and Chris Reiff, who also operate The Shoppe, which is open monthly featuring refurbished and curated home decor.
A franchise location for Rocket Fizz has opened at Empire Place. It sells more than 500 flavors of soda, mostly in glass bottles, along with a large selection of candy and novelty items. The shop at 4129 W. 41st St. is open daily.
Planet Heart will move from Avera Heart Hospital to the McHale Building at 3720 W. 69th St. early next year. Throughout the transition, patients can still be seen for the cardiac and vascular risk assessment.
Vikor has acquired Iowa-based Trusted Electric Inc., a solar energy construction company. Vikor is a full-service wireless infrastructure construction company.
After 20 years at The Empire Mall, locally owned Shoe Diva is moving to The Bridges at 57th. The store will be open at the mall through the end of August and hopes to reopen at The Bridges by Oct. 1 if not sooner. It’s taking over the former Supplement Warehouse space next to Sport Clips.
On the Rocks in Valley Springs is closing Friday, Aug. 23. Owners Robert Pralguske and his son, Jonathon, decided not to renew the lease for the bar, casino and convenience store they opened in 2021. Pralguske cited rising costs but noted that they might look for an opportunity in another town. The upcoming closure means that Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse, which operated the bar’s kitchen, will be left with just its Sioux Falls location. Owner Randy Ragatz expanded here in May, taking over the kitchen at The Gaslight Saloon.
