Makers market targets fall opening with expanded concept

Aug. 6, 2024

A new business for locally made merchandise plans to open in a larger space than originally planned.

Makers Exchange is under construction near Interstate 29 and the Tea interchange, north of Casey’s General Store.

Originally, it was planned as a 10,000-square-foot barn design, with makers renting small spaces inside to sell their work. It now has expanded to add a 3,000-square-foot cafe, which at first was going to be part of a second phase.

“Due to costs, it was much more effective for us to add the cafe on immediately, plus then we will be able to offer guests the full experiences at Makers Exchange right away,” said Bobbi Thury, whose family is one of five partnering in an ownership group for the business.

About 70 independently owned businesses are leasing space, with just a few spots remaining, she said.

“We are also really excited about the diversity of the independently owned businesses,” Thury said. “We hope the space reflects South Dakota charm and truly serves as a showcase for our local makers, crafters, artists, vendors and food producers.”

The barn is intended to celebrate the state’s agricultural roots, she said.

“Inside, we also want to offer a vibrant and layered experience,” she continued. “The individual businesses design their own space. We then bring that together under one roof to feel cohesive and reflect the quality, sophistication and uniqueness of what they are offering.”

The cafe will offer counter service and sit-down dining space, with a coffee bar and menu of gourmet waffles. There also will be products from local food producers sold there.

The hope is to open sometime in September.

Makers Exchange builds on increased retail activity in Tea, including the Down Home by DeBoers home store, which has served as a draw for customers from beyond the Sioux Falls area.

“Down Home by DeBoers has brought much-needed retail to the area, and it is locally owned and provides a unique offering,” Thury said. “The more-unique shopping options build synergy to attract people looking for things that aren’t cookie-cutter and who want to support local businesses rather than chains.”
