Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center, one of the oldest locally owned businesses in Sioux Falls, has been acquired by Builders FirstSource Inc., the leading building materials company in the industry. “Nothing is changing in the near term,” president Pat Costello said, adding he’s hoping the Schoeneman name also will continue.
Three businesses have opened in a new retail center at 81 Gardens, a mixed-use development at 81st and Minnesota. Jersey Mike’s Subs opened its third location in Sioux Falls, and Nekter Juice Bar opened its second. Prime IV is a new franchise to the city and offers hydration and wellness services.
American Ink Screen Printing & Embroidery is moving to a larger facility near the Tea exit for Interstate 29. The locally owned business at 125 N. Marion Road has operated for almost 20 years and expects to be open June 3 in a former Thornton Flooring warehouse at 47057 98th St.
Releve Studios will move in June to 712 S. Cliff Ave. Emilie Byrd and Peyton Jones started the dance studio in 2017 at 1821 S. Minnesota Ave.
Akshay Patel and Haresh Patel, owners of the market India Bazaar on East 10th Street, have opened a food truck, Taste of India. The new trailer is based in the parking lot of Food-N-Fuel at 100 N. Kiwanis Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Locally owned pet supply store Pawsabilities has closed. It opened in 2021 at 1208 W. 41st St.
Coffee & More is new this year to the local food truck scene. Andrea Abu of Tea started serving coffee, other drinks and baked goods from the converted bus this spring. She has been doing pop-ups at businesses and home games for Sioux Falls City Football Club.
Ellie Stone Bride is moving from 69th and Western to the mixed-use building The Crimson along 85th west of Minnesota. The new location will feature triple the space, allowing future brides to have a more private shopping experience. Pending the final stages of construction, owner Kalli Blackstone hopes to open in early July.
Target Corp. is closing a satellite location at 3901 W. 53rd St. where 59 employees provide credit card services. Half of the positions are being eliminated, and the others will have the opportunity to transfer to another Target position.
Hallmark is returning to Sioux Falls with a new franchisee. The gift store will be in the Empire Place retail center along 41st Street in front of The Empire Mall. Hallmark once had multiple locations in Sioux Falls but closed its last one in the Western Mall in 2020 when the local franchisee retired. Now, there’s a new franchisee for the market who has a number of locations nationwide. The plan is to be open by fall.
Starbucks at 4808 S. Western Ave. has outgrown its location and is getting a larger space. The coffee shop will move to a new site that will be built along 57th west of Western. The new Starbucks is scheduled to open next spring, and the current location will stay open until then.
Avera Health has purchased an acreage at 27091 469th Ave. in Tea, just off the northwest corner of Heritage Parkway and 271st Street. Avera Medical Group Tea serves the community. Avera hasn’t set a timeline to build.
Conner McMahan has opened North End Bakery & Deli in the Jones421 Building on North Phillips Avenue. North End will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. In addition to breakfast and lunch sandwiches, the restaurant serves salads, soups and sides. Customers also can buy fresh-baked loaves of bread and baked goods.
Stensland Family Farms has closed its east-side retail store at 4712 E. 41st St. Earlier this year, the northwest Iowa farm family business decided not to reopen its west-side retail store after closing for winter. The focus now is on the original location at 3101 W. 41st St., which opened in 2016.
Big Rig BBQ is back on the street as a food truck. That’s how the business got its start in 2015 before moving into a storefront next to Little Caesars at 41st and Minnesota. The restaurant closed in 2020, and Big Rig did limited catering in the meantime. The plan is to serve lunch on weekdays.
Furniture Mart USA has opened an Ashley furniture store in the former Bed Bath & Beyond space in The Empire East retail center. It’s the third location in Sioux Falls and is open daily.
National auto industry retailer Les Schwab Tire Center has opened its first Sioux Falls store. In addition to tires, the location offers brakes, shocks, alignment and oil changes. The nearly 15,000-square-foot location is at 5800 E. Arrowhead Parkway and includes eight bays. It’s open Monday through Saturday.
New business Vanilla Gorilla Frozen Treats serves Stensland Family Farms ice cream and a variety of toppings from small carts that can be booked for public or private events. The operation can be set up indoors or outdoors.
Southeastern Behavioral Health has moved from Fifth and Phillips to 600 S. Cliff Ave.
