Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Dunn Brothers Coffee at 8220 W. 12th St. has closed after three years in business. The location will be getting new owners, with a plan to open in the spring of 2026. A use hasn’t been announced. The east-side Dunn Brothers Coffee, which has different franchise owners, remains open.
The U.S. Bank building in downtown Sioux Falls has a new owner who plans to renovate most of it into a hotel with a top-floor restaurant and lounge. The 10-story property at 141 N. Main Ave. was purchased by an investment group this summer and will be redeveloped by Lamont Cos. Inc., an Aberdeen-based developer with more than 50 franchised hotels nationwide. Except for a first-floor U.S. Bank branch, most of the building will be converted to an AC Hotels by Marriott. Once a building permit is issued and construction begins, the project is expected to take 18 months.
The Spa on Phillips has a new owner with plans to upgrade it. Stefanie Engelstad bought the business at 224 N. Phillips Ave. from Michelle Lounsbery, who had owned it since 2020.
Pho Thai, which features Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine, is opening a third location in Sioux Falls. It will be in the former Denny’s location at 4001 E. 10th St. that has been vacant since the restaurant closed three years ago. It’s expected to open in late November.
An expansion and complete renovation are underway at Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls’ Cadillac dealership, 4410 W. 12th St. The show floor is growing to 10,000 square feet, and the expanded servicing space will fit twice as many vehicles. The project is expected to be completed in April.
A locally owned restaurant specializing in sticky rice and other Thai and Lao cuisine has opened at The Empire Mall. Dokmai’s Sticky Rice filled the space vacated by Eauthenentic Achipelago Taste, or EAT, which had opened in August.
Locally owned toy store Kidtopia is going out of business. A liquidation sale at the Dawley Farm Village store is underway, and owner Sheryl Nelson said she hopes to close by the end of the year. Nelson plans to continue operating a booth at Makers Exchange in Tea.
Watertown-based Prairie Lakes Healthcare System has become part of Sanford Health. The combined organization brings Prairie Lakes, an 800-employee organization, into Sanford, which now totals more than 53,000 employees. The system cares for 90,000 people in a 10-county region of northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota. Over time, Prairie Lakes will transition to the Sanford Health name.
Visual Swing Baseball & Softball Academy has delayed its grand opening to Nov. 22 to accommodate a plan to add more space. The expansion will provide a larger team cage area for training in the center at 3901 W. 53rd St.
A new indoor golf simulator business has opened at 1416 E. 69th St. Jackson Schipper is the franchisee for The Back Nine Golf. It features Full Swing technology and includes three bays, with the option to add a fourth. Memberships are available, along with tee times that are open to the public.
Plaza Azteca has expanded to the east side of Sioux Falls. The new upscale Mexican restaurant is at 5919 E. 26th St. It’s open daily. Plaza Azteca has a full liquor license, and the menu is almost identical to the location on West 69th Street.
Avera Heart Hospital has broken ground for the largest expansion since it opened in 2001. The new $21.5 million addition will include 35,000 square feet on the north side of the hospital facing Interstate 229. It will house high-end diagnostic imaging services and administrative space, freeing up more clinic space for North Central Heart. The addition should be ready for occupancy next winter.
Silencer Central has moved some of its operations into a new 70,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center adjacent to the headquarters at 4901 N. Fourth Ave. Automated technology that will pick inventory for shipping is expected to improve the company’s efficiency. The space also includes a 50-yard gun range and 3D printing operation for research and development.
Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant has reopened after a six-month remodeling project with a fresh look and a new menu. The restaurant, which is one of nine in South Dakota, has been at 5309 W. 41st St. since 2011. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Hollister has returned to The Empire Mall after more than a decade. The national retailer sells casual apparel, accessories and fragrances for men and women. It’s in the former Forever 21 space.
At the end of the year, Pizza Cheeks is closing its original location. The pizzeria began operating out of downtown’s The Hello Hi five years ago. Earlier this year, Pizza Cheeks opened a full-service restaurant with an expanded menu at 26th and Minnesota and scaled back downtown to selling only pizza slices. Through December, the location in the cocktail lounge will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. until sold out.
