Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Several changes are coming or have happened at The Empire Mall. Teen-focused apparel retailer Hollister is returning and will take over the former Forever 21 space. Carhartt will open in the former Verizon spot next to the food court. National retailer Perfume Palace is filling the former Journeys Kidz Store space. National furniture retailer Lovesac has opened in a space at center court, and local business Sawyer Wood Products has opened next to Macy’s in the former space for Shoe Diva, which moved to The Bridges at 57th. Lululemon will move into a combined space that will be almost three times larger than its current location. The two spaces became available when Accessory shop Lovisa moved into the former GameStop location and PINK by Victoria’s Secret consolidated with Victoria’s Secret. Bella Brow Bar closed one of its two locations in the mall. Wonderland, a locally owned toy and decor shop, has moved into the Macy’s wing.

Fernson Brewing Co.’s new food concept, Totally Rad Eats, has opened in Fernson Downtown. It took over the taproom’s kitchen, which had been leased for three years by Wagoo Burger. It serves breakfast sandwiches, burritos and other items from 8 to 10:30 a.m., pairing up with the taproom’s Fernson Coffee + Tea service, which opens at 7 a.m. The lunch and dinner menu, which features burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches, is available after 10:30 a.m. until one hour before the taproom’s closing time. In that final hour, customers can still order Totally Rad pizzas, pretzel bites and other snacks.

Locally owned Overhead Door will open next week in its new building on a 5-acre site at 740 N. Delbridge Drive. The building is about the same square footage as its original location at 6408 W. 12th St., which was spread out over six buildings. The new site will feature a showroom for its garage and oversized door products, including high-speed fabric doors, springless high-cycle doors, flush glass decorative doors and a new dock equipment line.

Robb Long and Chad Vander Lugt have created Old Daddin’. The business sells merchandise online that celebrates being an older-than-average father. “It’s not just some clothing and accessory brand-building,” Long said. “We’re going to try to build a community of older parents in general. Eventually, we want to start our own podcast.”

Second Helpings, a secondhand store with a focus on plus-size clothing, has moved from Carolyn Avenue to 2133 S. Minnesota Ave. The store owned by Ashley Howd buys and sells women’s clothing size extra-large and up. It’s open every day except for Tuesdays.

Sanford Orthopedic Hospital has set an opening date for its new nine-story, 161,000-square-foot building on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus. The first patients will be seen Jan. 12, 2026. The building will include 12 operating rooms and be staffed by 30 orthopedic physicians and 34 advanced practice providers. That’s also the expected opening date for Highpoint Hotel, a boutique hotel developed and operated by Hegg Cos. It will have a lobby and other offerings on the fourth floor and 56 guest rooms on the sixth and seventh floors.

Facing funding issues, the Eat Well Sioux Falls Mobile Market has closed while supporters try to find ways to make the project sustainable and restart it. The Mobile Market, a pilot project of the nonprofit Sioux Falls Thrive, opened in October 2023 to address areas of the city with limited access to retail groceries. An advisory board is organizing an independent nonprofit entity that intends to revise business and funding strategies to potentially revive the project.

Rosy’s Tacos has opened at 2305 W. Madison St. Owner Juan Nuno started the business as the food truck Rosi’s Tacos five years ago outside his La Carreta Bar at 2309 W. Madison St. He didn’t operate the food truck last year but planned to return this season — that changed when he got the chance to take over the vacant Watecha Bowl space next to the bar. After deciding to open the restaurant, which specializes in birria, he sold the food truck. Rosy’s — the name is an “accidental” misspelling for the new logo — opens daily at 9 a.m., closing at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

Creekside Medical Clinic, an independent physician-owned group based in Rapid City that specializes in primary care, has agreed to join Sanford Health. The clinic’s team includes four family medicine physicians and two advanced practice providers. All staff members are expected to join Sanford Health when the deal closes Sept. 1.

Asphalt production has started at L.G. Everist’s newest facility west of Harrisburg — the latest phase of a 60-acre development that also includes a ready-mix plant and recycling yard. The site along Interstate 29 doubles the company’s capacity in the Sioux Falls area.

The Good Samaritan Society, which is part of Sanford Health, has renovated the St. Martin Monastery in Rapid City to create Unity Place at Good Samaritan — St. Martin Village. It offers 22 assisted living units and 10 memory care assisted living units.

The new Meikamp Brothers Bakery & Co. is the creation of Lucas and Savannah Meikamp and their three sons: Ryver, Miles and Ollie. It sells baked goods made by Savannah’s employer, a northwest Iowa pastry manufacturer. Products are available at a roadside stand along Slip Up Creek Road near the Mapletown Golf Club on Fridays through Sundays, the Lake Lorraine Farmers Market and online.

CorTrust Bank plans to redevelop a block of Minnesota Avenue for a new two-story branch. It will mean a move from the bank’s longtime branch at 2101 S. Minnesota Ave., which it leases, to a new building that will be constructed between 21st and 22nd streets. The property currently includes a vacant gas station on the north side and a former office for Sanford Health to the south. Both parcels were purchased by CorTrust this spring. Pending city approval, the plan is to clear the property later this month and start construction after that. The hope is to open in the third quarter of 2026.

The former executive chef at Grille 26 and his uncle have started a food truck with dreams of someday owning a restaurant. The Black Sheep is owned by Jorge Garcia and his uncle Bruno Capelbo, and the menu features smashburgers, paninis and empanadas. They plan to be out daily for lunch and dinner and are taking bookings for public and private events.

Webit has been rebranded as SiteFlex. The business line of Carsforsale.com was founded in 2016 and creates and maintains websites geared toward small businesses. Several tech tools are integrated into one platform, which is available for a flat rate of $79 a month.

Drybar is returning to Sioux Falls with a new franchisee. Kim Perez is taking over the Empire Place location, which first opened in the summer of 2023, then closed in April 2024. The salon at 4123 W. 41st St., which focuses on blowouts, is expected to reopen in August.

The food truck Esther’s Overboard has started its first full season. Esther and Clint Zoss did a few events last year but now typically are out every weekend for pop-ups and events in Sioux Falls and other towns in southeast South Dakota. The menu features surf-and-turf items, including frog legs, lobster rolls and half-pound burgers. Esther’s is available for public and private events.

Wood Fired Catering also has entered its first full season with a “kitchen on wheels.” Owners Dallas Reese and Missy Spilger started doing barbecue competitions almost a decade ago and turned those skills into a catering business. They ventured into pop-ups last year using a stand and invested last fall in an enclosed trailer. The food truck’s menu features smoked meats in tacos and loaded mac-and-cheese bowls. Wood Fired Catering can be booked for public and private events.

605 Orthodontics will celebrate the grand opening of its clinic at 5901 E. 26th St. on Wednesday. The Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting at 4:30 p.m., followed by tours, a meet-and-greet with the 605 team, appetizers and refreshments until 6:30 p.m. The clinic, which is owned by orthodontist Dr. Rachel Soyland, moved into its new building in April.

The final day in business for the Sioux Falls location of Scandinavian Designs was June 16. The Idaho-based furniture store opened at 4401 W. Empire Place in 2019.
