As Showplace Cabinetry marks its 25th anniversary in the Sioux Falls area, the manufacturer is beginning a major expansion. An estimated $25 million investment will expand the company’s frameless production facility in Harrisburg from 76,800 square feet to 180,000 square feet. The Showplace campus also includes a framed cabinet plant and warehouse space, for a total of about a half-million square feet under one roof.

The Hilton Garden Inn Downtown is getting a new name and a completely new look. The decade-old property at 201 E. Eighth St. will become part of Hilton’s Tapestry collection, a group of more than 125 independent hotels nationwide, and will be called The Catlin Hotel. The hotel’s 136 guest rooms will be renovated beginning early next year, and the lobby will be redesigned to add a whiskey bar. The restaurant, banquet space, meeting rooms and patios also will be updated.

The fast-casual chain Atomic Wings has opened its first restaurant in Sioux Falls. The location at 1502 E. 69th St. is owned by local franchisees Eric and Stefanie Engelstad. It’s open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A building that would include Southeastern Behavioral Health and income-qualified apartments is planned for the so-called Mercato Block. The existing vacant structure in the 600 block of West 11th Street would be demolished and replaced by a three-story building with Southeastern Behavioral Health on the first floor and 55 apartments on the floors above. The developer is asking the city to rezone the property and is seeking housing tax credits from the state.

A new shop started by two co-workers at a car dealership applies powder coatings to metal objects that range from race car frames to vintage mailboxes. The Powder Haus is at 4000 W. Tickman St. Tyler McCallon and Thomas Baker hope to grow the business into full-time work.

Mexican flavors have arrived with the latest restaurant opening at Dawley Farm Village. La Cantina Mexican Restaurant at 704 S. Highline Place is open daily and has an extensive menu and full liquor license. It’s owned by Reyes Aranda, who has 14 Mexican eateries in four states, including La Plaza Fiesta at 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue.

DQ Grill & Chill will be part of the Harvest Creek development near 57th Street and Veterans Parkway. Construction is expected to start in spring 2025.

A new locally owned appliance business has opened on West 41st Street. Dream Home Appliance and Beds is owned by Joe and Michelle Stanford and is at 2723 W. 41st St. in the Plaza 41 retail center. It’s open Monday through Saturday.

Longtime Mexican restaurant Casa del Rey has closed, but the restaurant, its liquor license and the building are for sale. Cory O’Brien has owned the business at 901 W. Russell St. since 2016, purchasing it from Don Smith, who co-founded it in 1980. “I’m not closing the restaurant because we’re not making money,” said O’Brien, who started working there as a teenager. “I’m closing because I want to spend more time with family while the grandkids are small.”

Minnesota-based Lupulin Brewing Co. will close its Sioux Falls taproom when the lease expires this fall. The taproom at 2425 S. Shirley Ave. will close Oct. 31. Lupulin expanded here in 2019 when it acquired Hydra Beer Co. and took over its brewery and taproom.

Spin Cycle is building a showroom and warehouse for new and slightly used appliances near Interstate 229 and Rice Street. Victor Kottwitz started the business in 2014 out of a garage. The new location, which is expected to open later this year, will replace the storefront at 2200 E. 34th St. N. The business also offers options for in-store or in-home servicing and repair.

Bella Cucina Italian Ristorante has closed. Owner Donald Napolitano said he decided not to renew the lease at 2300 S. Minnesota Ave. because of rising rent, a staffing shortage and the loss of working capital to identity theft. The business opened in 2019 as Pizza di Paolo.

Tara Lothspeich and Cindy Jass opened 605 Petals & Pines earlier this year and began selling flowers this summer. The two grow flowers and then partner with other businesses to host bouquet-making events. They also do arrangements for weddings.

Richard and Suntheary Hamm have started a food truck that’s based in Canton. Sunny’s Eat Place features pizzas, sandwiches and desserts made by Richard Hamm, who has decades of experience as an executive chef. The food truck has hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — sometimes a little later — Monday, Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday and is based along Highway 18 at Dakota Street.

Kwik Star will open its seventh C-store and gas station in the Sioux Falls area on Wednesday. The newest site is at 7703 S. Bergamot Ave., along 85th Street east of Tallgrass Avenue. That opening will be followed Aug. 22 by Harrisburg’s second location, which is along Highway 115. Additional sites will open this fall in northwest and northeast Sioux Falls.

Precious Angels Learning Center has renamed its pre-K program to differentiate the classroom’s environment from those for younger age groups. The Owl Room is now Owl Academy. The upcoming program, which focuses on the social, emotional and cognitive skills needed to succeed in school, starts later this month.
