Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Culver’s has opened at 3300 W. Benson Road near the Sanford Sports Complex. The franchisee also has restaurants in Brookings and Watertown. It’s open daily.

A different franchise group is building a Culver’s restaurant in Tea. It will be in the Bakker Landing development west of I-29, next to Casey’s. The group also owns five of the six Culver’s locations in Sioux Falls. The Tea location is expected to open by June.

The owners of Windy City Bites have closed their brick-and-mortar restaurant and will return to operating their food truck full time and catering. Chicago natives DaShawn and Samantha Lewis started the food truck in 2020 and opened the restaurant at 114 N. Indiana Ave. in 2022.

Inca Mexican Restaurant is expanding to include a bar. Inca Bar is under construction in the space north of the longtime restaurant at 3312 S. Holly Ave. The bar will have its own entrance and also be accessible through the restaurant. It’s expected to open in January.

The longtime Rosie’s Cafe is expected to reopen in December under new ownership. Owner Tom Hinrichs is working with friend Barry Selland to remodel the space. The two plan to serve breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. The previous owner opened Rosie’s Farmhouse Cafe in Chester.

Formosa Food Company Inc. has broken ground in northeast Sioux Falls for a specialty pork production plant. Sisters Jennifer and Heather Shih are moving the business here from Hull, Iowa, where their parents started it in 1983. The plant is being built at 3100 N. Bahnson Ave. Formosa’s products are carried nationwide in Asian grocery stores.

Seasonal retailers have opened at The Empire Mall for the holidays. Among the offerings are What a Toy, Elegant Stone, Three Wise Men of Bethlehem, Queen Bee Ltd., Wonderland Holiday Ornament & Gifting, Alp Art and Dubai Chocolate and Giftable.

Sweetgrass Soapery, which makes bath and beauty products, and All Walks Trading Co., which sells Native American beadwork, star quilts, herbs and other items, will close their shared downtown storefront sometime before Christmas. Owner Miranda Koltze will continue to sell handcrafted wares online and at vendor events. She opened the store at 319 N. Main Ave. in 2021.

Led by a $300 million donation from philanthropist Denny Sanford, Sanford Health will build a hospital in Rapid City as part of its growing presence in the Black Hills. The proposed 480,000-square-foot Sanford Black Hills Medical Center campus will include 168 inpatient beds, and the campus will be large enough to double that. The medical center will include a range of other services. The 110-acre site is in southwest Rapid City, adjacent to the Black Hills Orthopedic & Spine Clinic, which became part of Sanford Health late last year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 with completion expected in 2030.

A new business in Dell Rapids sells secondhand women’s clothing, home goods and decor, and also sells fresh flowers. Lacey Harrington opened Lilac & Loom earlier this month at 507 N. Highway 77. She accepts consignments. The business is open Tuesday through Saturday.

The Ribbon at Jacobson Plaza has opened for ice skating. The Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation Department offers skate rentals through the warming house at the plaza, 810 N. Phillips Ave. Rental is $3, and a 45-minute session on the ice is $5. When the warming house isn’t open, skating is free – just bring your own skates.

The largest indoor pickleball center in Sioux Falls has opened. The Jar Pickleball Club offers eight courts and a pro shop at 3701 S. Western Ave. It’s open daily, with 24-hour access for members. Public play also is available.

A new medical clinic, Thrive & Co., specializes in hormone optimization and also offers medical weight-loss services and peptide and IV therapies. Owner Allie Oplinger is a physician assistant who most recently provided medical care at a for-profit clinic. Thrive & Co. is at 7520 S. Grand Arbor Court.

Theresa and Justin Kor are working to open Pirates Plunder Black Light Mini Golf at 1503 E. 10th St. More than half of the 9,000-square-foot space will be filled with 18 black-lit, pirate-themed miniature golf holes being designed and built by an industry expert from Missouri. The business also will include 17 arcade-style redemption games. It’s expected to open in spring.
