Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Pho Thai has opened a second location in Sioux Falls. The locally owned restaurant, which serves Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food, is at 3801 W. 34th St. It’s open Monday through Saturday.
The owners of The Treasury cocktail bar have started a food truck. Chew Chew features some of the same menu items as the bar and could serve as a test kitchen for it. Find the truck Wednesdays for lunch at the Cherapa Place plaza and in the evenings Thursday through Saturday at Highball on East Eighth Street.
A national tech-driven business where basketball training meets gaming is expanding to Sioux Falls. Shoot 360, which offers a science- and data-based program for basketball players, also offers games for kids and adults. The North Dakota-based franchisees are looking for a location.
Starbucks has opened in the lobby of Sanford USD Medical Center. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Several local divisions of Muth Electric now are under one roof in Sioux Falls, thanks to a brand-new office and warehouse building at Foundation Park. The business has started operating out of a 24,500-square-foot building that sits on 7 acres, directly east of the Amazon fulfillment center. Family-owned Muth Electric is based in Mitchell and was founded in 1970. The Sioux Falls office is the company’s largest, with about 160 employees.
A new food truck, The Corndog Company, features corndogs, deep-fried cheese and desserts. Ana Gutierrez of South Sioux City, Nebraska, is the owner of the licensed concept. It’s open for lunch and dinner at various locations, mainly in the Sioux Falls area.
A family-owned music business has opened a new location in Harrisburg. Tilghman’s Academy of Music offers music lessons — online and in-person — and music supplies. The new location is at 220 S. Cliff Ave., Suite 104, on the north end of Harrisburg. Chris and Kaitlyn Tilghman opened their first studio in 2018.
A “taste of the islands” is the theme of a new food truck in Sioux Falls. 605 Island Guy features the flavors owner Nefu Mageo enjoyed growing up in American Samoa. Mageo is the general manager of Hillside Resort on Lake Madison, so he’s planning to be out with the food truck a couple of times a week.
True Care Family Pharmacy has closed. The pharmacy opened in 2017 at 1120 E. 10th St. and was owned by Lindsey Osterkamp, a former K-mart pharmacist. She said pharmacy benefit managers have made it financially prohibitive for independents to compete.
Will and Danielle Gautney of Baltic have started a mobile coffee shop. Liberty Coffee & Espresso had been open five days a week in the town north of Sioux Falls but recently started Saturday-only hours for summer. In addition to coffee and tea drinks, they serve breakfast burritos. Baked goods will return to the menu this fall.
J. Crew Factory is planning to open at The Empire Mall, likely in time for the holiday shopping season. The national retailer carries “preppy-inspired” apparel and accessories for men, women and children. It’s planning to start construction in July in the former Go Calendars, Toys & Games space in the JCPenney wing. That retailer moved to a smaller space across the hall.
Several changes have occurred in the first-floor marketplace of the mixed-used Jones421 building at 421 N. Phillips Ave. A new business specializing in a curated selection of “all things dog” has opened. Dog groomer Nikole Edberg started The Tail That Got Away. The retail shop is in the former The Deku Tree space. That plant business has moved in with 605 Florista, another tenant in the building. Another new addition will be Hunnid Stylez, which will combine clothing with a barbershop. It will be in the former space of Intoxibakes, which moved to The Empire Mall. Other openings in the past few months include clothing store 1st Gen HQ and North End Bakery & Deli.
Titans Tavern has opened in Tea. The restaurant and bar is in the former Tea Steak House, which has housed two other businesses since it closed in 2021. For now, hours are 3 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The owners plan to add lunch hours eventually.
A Sioux Falls woman with a passion for thrifting has opened a storefront for her previously Instagram-only business. The Small Shoppe, owned by Jenny Putzke, is open most Friday and Saturday afternoons in the Gourley Building at Sixth and Main. Customers have to contact her through Instagram to get a code to enter the building.
Dakota Drafting & Design has moved to a new office at 200 N. Heritage Parkway, Suite 104, in Tea. The business was acquired by Jesse Nielsen in late 2023 and has been providing drafting services to architects, Realtors, contractors and investors since 2006.
