Minnesota Avenue demolition sets stage for future road project

June 10, 2025

Three properties along Minnesota Avenue have been demolished to make way for a future road project.

The almost 3-acre property is at 3600, 3604 and 3612 S. Minnesota Ave.

An office building and warehouse were demolished. Building tenants had been vacated or relocated over the past couple of years, city engineering program manager Shannon Ausen said.

The city of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation evenly shared the cost of the property acquisition.

“The demolition of the building is complete,” Ausen said. “The site will be restored/seeded with the project. The parcel will sit vacant until the project is bid.”

The actual reconstruction of Exit 3, which is Minnesota Avenue and Interstate 229, won’t happen until 2027-28, after Cliff Avenue at I-229, or Exit 4, is complete.

“The project is in final environmental approval/final design with right-of-way acquisition planned for later this year,” Ausen said.
