As an overnight nurse, Trevor Alvarez is used to an unpredictable schedule.

Fitting in a workout means committing to it – and finding a fitness center that can accommodate his hours.

“That’s one of the reasons I joined GreatLIFE, to be honest,” said Alvarez, who joined GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness nearly two years ago.

“I was at another gym, and it was a good fit for me, but I made the jump because of how GreatLIFE provides a lot of opportunities with its 24/7 satellite gyms. That was huge for me.”

He uses the fitness center at 39th Street and Phillips Avenue regularly and also enjoys Woodlake Athletic Club.

“Sometimes, I also pick up odd shifts, so with GreatLIFE, I can get day errands done, lawn care and then go at night when there are less people,” he said. “There’s a selection of classes during the day, I could do a half-hour class with a trainer and then supplement at night.”

Wonder what it’s like in the gym at midnight? You might find Alvarez there.

“Less people, all the machine are open, a lot of night-shift gym rats would be there,” he said, laughing. “It’s a little different culture, and the people are great. That’s another thing with transferring gyms. It becomes a family, so you’re moving from one gym family to another, but I always feel welcomed. They say your name out loud. They know I have a daughter and know who she is.”

He enjoys bringing his 10-year-old daughter to work out, and she has started asking to go, he said.

“That alone says I’m doing something right,” he said. “She’s done a PLAY Everything camp and a basketball camp. She’s always open to try things with GreatLIFE.”

They enjoy shooting baskets at multiple GreatLIFE locations.

“We use the courts downtown and at Woodlake, and they’re phenomenal,” he said. “It’s just bigger enough where other people are playing, and she can watch that. One day, another fourth grader showed up, and they played one-on-one.”

And for those with younger children, “GreatLIFE’s child care is a huge deal,” he added. “If you don’t have someone to watch your kid, you don’t work out, and they make it seamless.”

He also has done some work with a trainer, and “those have been great,” he said. “GreatLIFE hires really good people who are personable, and that matters. A lot of people don’t like going to the gym, but I love it, and having personable trainers is super helpful.”

The atmosphere at GreatLIFE “is such that you make new friends, make new bonds with the workers,” he continued. “Every employee I’ve seen has been great, and that’s a huge deal.”

He’s also a big fan of the Recovery Lounge.

“I do sports – or try – and it’s great after a game,” Alvarez said. “I can do a hot sauna and an ice bath and the massage guns, and I use them quite often.”

Now that cooler weather is here, he plans to take advantage of other GreatLIFE benefits with his daughter, including free bowling.

“We’re a busy family, but that’s one of the reasons I joined, so I want to take full advantage,” he said. “There are so many places to go.”
