The owners of Intoxibakes have expanded their sweet empire.

They’ve purchased Candy Cloud Factory and plan to keep operating it as is, with some product crossover between the two businesses, said Holly Jorgenson, who started Intoxibakes with daughter Josie Layton and daughter-in-law Shannon Johnson in 2017.

The two shops are just a few blocks apart on North Phillips Avenue.

They connected with the owners of Candy Cloud Factory while starting to explore options for different locations because their lease in the Jones421 Building expires in the spring. They said they have no plans to move but saw the potential for expanding, Jorgenson said.

“It’s a great complement to what we do. We definitely can bring in some new products and nonboozy stuff over there,” she said, noting that likely will start happening around the holidays.

Intoxibakes makes alcohol-infused and traditional cupcakes, cakes and other baked goods. It started as an online operation with delivery services and opened in 2019 as a retail bakery in the Jones421 Building at 421 N. Phillips Avenue. Two years later, it doubled in size with a move into a larger space.

Candy Cloud Factory was founded in Mitchell and expanded to Sioux Falls in 2019 when Edward Clark and Luke Jessen bought it. The shop was the first business to open along the boardwalk of The Cascade at 701 N. Phillips Ave. In addition to fresh-spun and packaged cotton candy, it serves SDSU Ice Cream.

The Mitchell location is no longer open.

Owning a cotton candy shop brings back fond memories for Jorgenson.

“I grew up around cotton candy,” she said. “My cousins own Mac’s Carnival. … When I was little, we used to have it all the time. My aunt actually had a cotton candy machine in her house.”
