Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Iconic sports footwear retailer Vans is coming to The Empire Mall. The store will be in the Go Calendar space in the JCPenney wing and is expected to open in time for the holiday shopping season. Go Calendar will relocate in the mall.
Canton has three new food offerings. M.I. Nuts Company moved into 102 W. Fifth St. In addition to roasted nuts, owner Michelle Oas makes fudge and also serves sandwiches, pizza and daily specials. She also added a seating area with an arcade that includes pool, darts, foosball and video games. Noid’s Gaming Parlour, 109 S. Main St., is now the home for Who Wan’ Smoke, which started as a barbecue stand in Sioux Falls last year. Sioux Valley Grille has added an ice cream parlor to the restaurant at 117 E. Fifth St. It also sells baked goods.
Jack Rose Social Club has opened its second restaurant, bar and casino in Sioux Falls. The business, which is owned by Commonwealth Gaming & Holdings, is part of The Steel District and is on the first floor of the mixed-use building at 151 E. Fourth Place. The restaurant’s menu is the same as the original location at 69th and Western with appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. The bar has a full liquor license, and two casino areas have 10 video lottery machines each. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
The former Taco John’s building at 1420 W. 41st St. will have another life as a restaurant. Asian Cuisine Express, which also has a location in South Sioux City, is expanding to Sioux Falls. Menu options will include stir-fry dishes, noodles, fried rice, sushi, dim sum and steamed buns. Once a building permit is issued, owner Cong Lin expects remodeling to take three to five months.
The owner of Lucky’s won bids for three of four new liquor licenses issued by the city. There will be Tilted Trophy – that’s a working name — sports bars at 5701 E. 41st St. and 5219 W. 26th St. and Velvet Thunder cocktail lounge at 220 S. Phillips Ave. The fourth license went to Commonwealth Gaming & Holdings for a site at 5409 W. 41st St. No details on that concept are available yet. The new licenses must be put into operation within two years.
Maine-based The MEMIC Group, led by parent company Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Co., has entered into an agreement to acquire The Dakota Group, which includes Risk Administration Services Inc. in Sioux Falls and its four affiliated insurance services companies. The combining of the companies will make The MEMIC Group the third-largest multistate workers’ compensation specialist in the U.S. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in early January 2026.
A multistate Mexican restaurant owner who has two locations in Sioux Falls has purchased the former Applebee’s building in Brookings. Reyes Aranda plans to move his Brookings location for La Cantina into the larger building near the I-90 interchange.
The newest addition to the dining scene in downtown Sioux Falls features pheasant, bison and other local meats and fish. Locally owned Rivage Oak Kitchen has opened in the former Ode to Food and Drinks space at Cherapa Place. The restaurant, which has a full liquor license, opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Closing time is 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Ode moved earlier this year into the restaurant space in the nearby Country Inn & Suites.
Bluestone Federal Credit Union is taking a new approach with its next location: a microbranch. The smaller footprint space will be near 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue and offer members access to interactive ATMs and lending services. It also will be staffed for members needing in-person support. The branch at 6311 W. 41st St. is scheduled to open in spring 2026.
All seven Kum & Go gas stations in Sioux Falls are under new ownership. Utah-based Maverik — Adventure’s First Stop sold four of the locations to Iowa-based Casey’s General Stores Inc. and three to Omaha-based Mega Saver. Casey’s closed locations on Rice and Burnside streets because they were near newly purchased sites.
Chris Fischer and Andrew Hahn have opened War-Torn Cycles near Hartford. The two military veterans hope their motorcycle repair and service shop also can help support veterans and first responders who might be struggling with their experiences.
Starbucks has closed four locations in the Sioux Falls area and won’t open one in Harrisburg that was under construction. Coffee shops closed at 1403 N. Marion Road, 2230 S. Marion Road and 1501 W. 41st St. in the city and 108 Venture Place in Tea. Starbucks announced last week that it planned to close about 400 locations nationwide.
McDonald’s is coming to Harrisburg. Franchisee Leonard Management is building the restaurant at 148 N. Cliff Ave. It’s expected to open in early December.
Today is the final day for JuLiana’s Boutique La Femme, 196 E. Sixth St. Julie Haagenson and Lana Olshove started the women’s clothing shop almost a decade ago.
Orthopedic Institute has opened an outreach clinic in Luverne, Minnesota. It’s located within Freedom Family Clinic and provides diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions with a focus on hip, knee, foot and ankle, shoulder, elbow and other sports-related injuries. When surgery or advanced diagnostic imaging is required, patients will be referred to OI’s main clinic in Tea.
