Casey’s, Mega Saver buy local Kum & Go stores

Sept. 25, 2025

All seven Kum & Go gas stations in Sioux Falls are under new ownership.

Utah-based Maverik — Adventure’s First Stop sold four of the locations to Iowa-based Casey’s General Stores Inc. and three to Omaha-based Mega Saver.

Casey’s has taken over the Kum & Go stores at 1400 N. Minnesota Ave., 1400 N. Cliff Ave., 412 N. Sycamore Ave. and 1005 W. 11th St. The stores have been closed since earlier this week while the company resets and rebrands them. Cliff and Sycamore will reopen Friday, while the other two will reopen Saturday, a worker said.

Today, Casey’s closed its location on Rice Street because the smaller, older store is only a few blocks away from the one it’s taking over on Cliff Avenue.

It also closed the location at 1705 W. Burnside St., which is about 1.5 miles from the takeover Kum & Go at Minnesota and Russell Street.

For Mega Saver, the Sioux Falls stores are the first expansion into South Dakota. The privately owned company was founded in 2002 under the name Tobacco and Phones 4 Less and has more than 50 stores in the Omaha area, “27 and counting” in Iowa and two in Florida, said Kassie Schenck, community manager.

The company bought the stores at 6001 S. Western Ave., 7100 W. 41st St. and 501 N. Minnesota Ave. While new exterior signs haven’t been installed yet, the stores are operating as Mega Saver.

“We’ll be keeping many of the familiar offerings customers are used to, while expanding on what’s available, bringing our lower prices, higher-quality food and fuel options,” Schenck said. “Beyond that, Mega Saver is also known for international grocery selections, affordable phone plans, repair services and community events.”

The Sioux Falls stores will sell cellphone accessories, but the business hasn’t decided yet if phone service plans will be available, she said.

Maverik has owned the Kum & Go chain since 2023, buying it from the family-owned Krause Group of Iowa. The deal included more than 400 locations in 13 states, doubling the size of Maverik. It began a rebranding process late last year.

The only other Kum & Go location in South Dakota is in Elk Point. According to the Maverik website, it will close at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 and reopen as Maverik at 6 a.m. Nov. 19.

Casey’s and Maverik did not return messages for details about the conversions.

Editor’s note: This story was updated Sept. 26 with comments from Mega Saver and an additional closing for Casey’s.
