Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Watertown-based Stein Sign Display is expanding to Sioux Falls. The company specializes in designing, manufacturing, installing and servicing interior and exterior signs for businesses and has incorporated billboard advertising into its operation. The company will use one of the former Gage Brothers buildings at 12th Street and Interstate 29 as an office for sales, management and design staff. The plan is to remodel a building on the south end of the site for garages for its crane trucks. There’s also enough room to potentially add a new building to support production. The plan is to move in this spring.
Denver-based Big Red Development plans to build an apartment complex in the center of the former Gage Brothers site. The Rhys Apartments project calls for 178 two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments in its first phase, using a wrap-style, four-story building with amenities in the center. The rents will be capped at 60 percent of area median income. The project’s second phase is envisioned as 120 to 150 units, primarily one-bedroom apartments. Assuming financing comes together, the hope is to be under construction by late this year and open 16 to 17 months later.
Starbucks has relocated from a retail center at 4808 S. Western Ave. to a new stand-alone building at 2225 W. 57th St.
Big Lost Meadery and Ranch & Roost have opened at Lake Lorraine. Big Lost Meadery will brew beers on-site, while the mead will continue to be made at the original site in Wyoming and shipped here. At Ranch & Roost, the specialty is burgers and chicken. The new building that holds both businesses is at 2215 S. Lorraine Place. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
A prepared-meal business in south Sioux Falls has added a cafe to its offerings. Dine, which opened in August 2024 in a retail center at 2210 W. 69th St., has rebranded as Dine Cafe to reflect the addition of made-to-order breakfast and lunch items. The business is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Ode to Food and Drinks has closed at Cherapa Place but is moving to the former Falls Landing Bar & Grill space in the Country Inn & Suites Hotel at 200 E. Eighth St. It plans to reopen this week for hotel guests only and next week for the public. Rivage Oak Kitchen will take over the Cherapa Place space. It’s a new concept from the owners of Invictus Pizza Kitchen and will focus on South Dakota-inspired dishes using pheasant, walleye and bison. The plan is to open by July.
The new Cat Tails Feline Pet Spa and Hotel Suites in Tea offers grooming and boarding exclusively for cats. Owner Jennifer Biggins also operates Paws & Reflect Grooming in Tea and wanted to separate her services for cats and dogs.
Forever 21 in The Empire Mall is closing, along with at least 200 of its 359 locations in the U.S. The company is expected to file for bankruptcy, according to media reports. A closing date for the Sioux Falls store has not been announced.
Longtime health care provider Mary Wuebben has started a clinic. Accelerate Wellness has opened at 5201 E. 57th St. The clinic specializes in personalized, holistic care, working alongside traditional health care providers, and uses a self-pay model.
One restaurant in The Empire Mall food court has closed while another has opened. China Pantry, which had been there for decades, is no longer in business. El Burrito has opened in the former Taco John’s space. It offers create-your-own burritos, bowls, tacos and quesadillas.
Joann has started going-out-of-business sales at all stores and online. A liquidator purchased the company’s assets as part of bankruptcy proceedings. A final date has not been announced for the store at 2725 W. 41st St.
Pizza Cheeks has expanded into a full-service restaurant in a new location. The locally owned concept, which had been operating out of The Hello Hi, is in the former Kaladi’s Bistro space at 1716 S. Minnesota Ave. In addition to pizzas, the new menu offers appetizers, salads, sandwiches and pastas. It’s open daily for lunch and dinner. Pizza is still available by the slice in the downtown cocktail bar.
The Maker’s Circle has opened at 701 N. Phillips Ave. The business sells locally made merchandise, offers take-and-make crafts and provides workshops and summer camps. The store is open Friday through Sunday.
B&G Milkyway ice cream shops have started to reopen for the season. The chain also is expanding to its first location outside of the Sioux Falls metro area with a shop in Mitchell that’s expected to open later this month.
Mary’s Mountain Cookies has opened a second location in Sioux Falls. The bakery at 6005 S. Cliff Ave. is open daily. In addition to 5-ounce cookies in almost two dozen flavors, it sells ice cream, cookie ice cream sandwiches, decorated cookie cakes and other treats.
Cost Cutters at 2720 W. 12th St has closed.
