Coin, antiques business opens on west side

Sept. 6, 2024

An online coin and antique shop has opened in a bricks-and-mortar location in western Sioux Falls.

James Peterson, who moved to Sioux Falls four years ago, opened Greatstuff4you Coins & Curios at the beginning of the month at 945 S. Marion Road, next to The Thirsty Duck Bar & Grill.

Peterson promises “a real smorgasbord of items” in his store, but he specializes in buying and selling and silver and gold, “whether it’s coins from around the world or actual bullion rounds of bars.” He describes his inventory as a “coin and antique store but with flair.”

The 650-square-foot store offers a unique selection of high-end jewelry, sterling silver items such as silverware and plates, and vintage items such as toy trains and Ertl and Tonka die-cast metal collectibles. He offers collectible items such as watches, pocketknives, Native American goods, glassware, sports cards, vintage clothes, shoes and “tons of random antiques.”

Peterson also offers free estimates and research on items that people bring in. “It’s a great place to come to if you stumble on a coin collection or an antique collection,” he said. “You can find out how much the soda bottles are worth.”

Peterson’s own interest in collecting began in his childhood. “I’ve been interested in collectible vintage items since going to Dollar Store and buying clowns with my mom,” he said. “Later in life, I met … (a man), he was telling me about silver, the price is going up. I’ve just always been into coins and collecting and stacking coins.”

Greatstuff4you also operates online, and Peterson will continue to livestream the items he has on sale from his shop. When he is online, he wears a green mask and glasses to protect his identity. He also talks in rhymes.

“I’m a mask-wearing online streamer opening up a retail store in the great city of Sioux Falls who will be livestreaming from the store, selling and buying from the public,” Peterson said. “This ain’t your dusty thrift store.”

Greatstuff4you’s hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

If the brick-and-mortar store is as successful as its online presence, Peterson — half-jokingly — said this could lead to something else.

“I’m telling my online fans, if I do succeed and don’t go bankrupt during my two-year lease, then I will be running for mayor of Sioux Falls,” he said.

You can follow Greatstuff4you on Whatnot for livestream sales, eBay for new inventory and YouTube for fresh content.
