Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
A popular burger restaurant from the Twin Cities and a new Mexican concept from the same restaurant group have opened at The Steel District. Big Sioux Burger and Dahlia Kitchen + Bar are on the first floor of the office tower at 150 E. Fourth Place. Ironwood, a third restaurant from the group, is scheduled to open Nov. 5 in the same building.
A national early childhood education and child care business is expanding to Sioux Falls. Primrose School is being franchised locally by Paige and Zach Berg. The school is being built at 7500 S. Audie Ave., along 85th Street west of Minnesota Avenue, and is expected to open next summer. It will be able to accommodate 176 children from infants until they start kindergarten.
Domino’s will be opening two new locations in the Sioux Falls area. The first site will be on North Marion Road, across the street from Jefferson High School. Domino’s will occupy a drive-thru endcap in a new five-tenant retail center. It’s expected to open next year. The second new location will be in Brandon in a retail center on Holly Boulevard that includes Scooter’s Coffee and an Edward Jones office. That site also will have a drive-thru pickup window and is expected to be open by the end of the year.
A new restaurant with more than two dozen taco options has opened in Worthing. The Taco Vault is on Main Street in a former bank building. It also features favorites from The Big Orange Truck and craft beers. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
The Jones421 Building downtown is gaining two new tenants. Dakota Craft Links will be in the former Flying Santo Taco Bar space. Chef Ryan Tracy’s new venture will be a combination market and restaurant featuring his sausages. It’s set to open Wednesday. The jewelry store Couture is taking over the Sera Bella Crystals & Spa spot and will open in time for the holiday season. Owner Yvonne Jiew has operated a wholesale gem and jewelry business for more than 20 years and is expanding into a retail space.
Mexican restaurant Plaza Azteca is expanding to the east side of Sioux Falls. The restaurant group essentially will duplicate its location along 69th Street west of Louise Avenue, which opened two years ago. The east-side location will be built at 5915 E. 26th St. and is expected to open before the end of next year.
SISU Fit has opened at the Cherapa Place development. The modern boutique fitness center is on the first floor of The Dakota Flats, 324 N. Reid Place. The gym is open 24 hours and includes a pod-like system connecting members with more than 14,000 digital workouts. SISU Fit also offers fitness assessments, nutrition consultations and access to fitness trainers and will add exercise classes. The ownership group includes Annie and Chris Mello of CPMFitness. They closed their site in the Western Mall so they could merge their staff, community and functional fitness experience into SISU.
Greg Koch is now the sole owner of 605 Running Co. Koch had been a minority owner of the 10-year-old store since 2018. The store, which sells running shoes and apparel and organizes races, has two locations.
Samantha O’Neil and Kallie Larsen have started Electric Jaunt, which offers e-bikes for rent in downtown Sioux Falls. The pedal-assist bikes, of which there are 50, can be taken anywhere in the city as long as they are returned to the downtown bike racks. Riders use an app to start the rental.
Dr. Mark and Michelle Lounsbery are converting their Fit to be Well franchise – originally known as Profile — to an independent concept, LivWell. They originally became franchisees when Profile was part of Sanford Health. The store at 1900 S. Minnesota Ave. offers nutrition products, personalized nutrition coaching, weight-loss coaching and weight-loss medications. The Lounsberys also have partners who operate two stores in North Dakota, and they envision franchising their business model.
A new business offers a mobile charcuterie cart for weddings, parties and other gatherings. The Grazing Cart provides appetizer-sized servings to guests. It’s the creation of Sherri Bostwick of Lennox, who also operates Front Porch Concessions with her husband, Brandon.
Everest Indian Cuisine is opening a second location in Sioux Falls. The Indian restaurant will fill the space at 431 W. 85th St. that became empty when Urban Chislic closed. The plan is to open by early December.
The newest Papa Murphy’s in Sioux Falls is the first to feature a pickup window for the made-from-scratch, take-and-bake pizzas. The store is in a new retail center at 4205 W. 57th St., west of Louise Avenue. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Prairie Berry Winery and Miner Brewing Co. near Hill City are winding down business and will close by the end of the year. The property will be offered for sale in three parcels. At one point, Prairie Berry expanded to Sioux Falls with a location downtown. It then moved to a combined space with Miner Brewing at the Western Mall, which closed two years ago.
Who Wan’ Smoke has a new location outside Vape Pen Sales at 1101 S. Cliff Ave. and also has a trailer now. Richard Simpson opened his barbecue stand in August in a parking lot at 49th and Minnesota but had to find a new home.
Sensory Studio is moving from Harrisburg to 3000 E. Jackson St., near 69th and Southeastern. The sensory play park will share a building with Functional Kids Pediatric Therapy, which uses the services for its patients. Sensory Studio also can be rented by private groups and offers public play times. The transition will occur in mid-November.
