Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Popular Twin Cities egg sandwich shop Egg on a Roll is planning a second Sioux Falls location. The restaurant plans to open this summer inside The One2, a new mixed-use building on the south end of downtown along 12th Street between First and Second avenues. It plans to open its first location this spring at The Bridges at 57th.

Hy-Vee is replacing Wahlburgers locations in its stores across the Midwest with a return to its Market Grille format. Wahlburgers was in three Hy-Vees in Sioux Falls. Beginning today, all Hy-Vee restaurants started offering a new breakfast menu. A new lunch and dinner menu will roll out throughout February.

Session Ale Works is closed for renovation and rebranding. The restaurant and craft beer bar at 323 S. Whitewood Circle is expected to reopen in April.

Off-track betting is coming to The SandBar & Grill, which will be renamed Railbirds. A new ownership group is remodeling the restaurant and expanding into an adjacent vacant space with the area for gambling on horse and dog racing. The OTB area is expected to open before the end of March.

Volunteers of America, Dakotas, is the new owner of one of the former Apple Tree Children’s Center sites. The nonprofit recently purchased the building at 700 N. Sycamore Ave. and plans to use it as an expanded site for its day services programming for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The new location will replace a former warehouse currently used in the area of Cleveland and Rice. The plan is to move into the new site in late spring or early summer.

JDS Industries is now owned by its employees. Second-generation owner and CEO Scott Sletten transferred ownership of the company, which is a wholesale supplier of awards, recognition, personalization and signage products, to an employee stock ownership plan. Companywide, JDS has about 350 employees, including almost 200 in Sioux Falls, and sells to about 35,000 businesses nationwide and even around the world.

Kwik Star and Les Schwab Tire Center are the latest national retailers heading to Brandon. They’re planning to build in the Brandon 90 Plaza, a commercial development on the southeast corner of the Interstate 90 exit. In addition, Casey’s has purchased land on Aspen Boulevard across from Brandon Golf Course for its second gas station in the community.

The long-awaited KPOT will open Wednesday at 2814 S. Louise Ave. Diners will prepare their all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue and hot pot food at the table. The restaurant will have a nightclub vibe, said Anna Zheng, one of the franchise owners.

Orthopedic Institute will begin seeing patients Feb. 10 at its new building in Tea. Services at 2120 E. Live Strong St. in the Bakker Landing development include a walk-in clinic, advanced image and procedure capabilities and outpatient physical and occupational therapy and rehabilitation. While OI’s 22 physicians will still perform surgeries at other hospitals, some minor procedures will be done in the new building such as treating carpel tunnel syndrome or doing trigger finger releases. OI has been located on the Avera McKennan campus for 25 years. It’s also moving its Performance Center out of the GreatLIFE facility it shares at 69th and Southeastern.

Simon’s Tacos has opened a second location in Sioux Falls. The locally owned restaurant is at 2401 E. 10th St. in a former Pita Pit space. It’s open daily.

A new barbershop east of downtown aims to offer more than haircuts. The Artist’s Club at 1512 E. 10th St. is owned by Abdiel Ramirez and Jonathan Marroquin. Ramirez said the aim is to provide a unique blend of artistry, community and exceptional service. While the shop caters primarily to men, including children, Ramirez said anyone is welcome.

A new Mexican restaurant features the style of ranch cooking in the state of Durango and dishes from other Latin American countries such as El Salvador. Gorditas Durango is in the former Burger Time building at 2300 W. 12th St. The locally owned restaurant is open daily.

Tasty T plans to open this month in the food court at The Empire Mall. The menu includes Korean corn dogs, mochi donuts, coffee and boba tea. It has locations in other malls, but this will be the first in South Dakota.

Bobbi Clayton and Meagan Turbak are opening The Maker’s Circle at The Cascade at Falls Park, 701 N. Phillips Ave. Along with selling work from different makers, they plan to use the space to host make-and-take classes and a summer camp for students, plus a pop-in station where anyone can stop in and make something on the spot. The Maker’s Circle is targeting a March 1 opening and is signing up students for its summer camps now.

A shop offering refurbished furniture and vintage home decor near downtown now will be open a couple of days every week. Seasoned Style at 824 W. 10th St. had been open once a month and now is open every Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus the second Saturday of the month during the same hours.

Breadico is coming back downtown in the form of a new cafe at Cherapa Place. The sourdough bread shop will keep its retail presence at 6219 S. Western Ave. while bringing an expanded menu to the new Breadico Cafe inside The Bancorp Building along the Big Sioux River. The plan is to open sometime this summer.

The owners of Polar Bites have decided that they won’t reopen the downtown location this spring. Matt and Jess Rooney plan to focus instead on the 41st Street location and the two Dakota Snow mobile units. Polar Bites, then known as Sub Zero Desserts, opened in spring 2023 in the 8th & Railroad Center.
