Sioux Falls doctor named among Bush Fellows

March 20, 2018

Dr. Benson Hsu of Sanford Health has been named one of 24 Bush Fellows in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota.

Hsu is a pediatric critical care physician at Sanford Children’s Hospital, medical director of pediatric air transport, chief data and analytics officer at Sanford and an assistant scientist in the Children’s Health Research Center. He’s also an assistant professor in pediatrics at the USD Sanford School of Medicine.

His research revolves around inconsistencies in the U.S. system of health care finance with the goal of finding novel ways to improve value in health care delivery.

The fellowship provides up to $100,000 over 12 to 24 months to pursue learning experiences that help develop leadership skills and attributes, allowing fellows to articulate what they need to become more effective leaders. They can use the funding for advanced education, networking, leadership resources, workshops and training.

“The 2018 Bush Fellows are exceptional leaders who have made the most of the opportunities in their lives,” said Anita Patel, director of leadership programs for the Bush Foundation. “We believe the well-being of our region is directly impacted by investing in individuals who will shape the future. We are betting on the potential of these 24 Fellows to make a significant impact in their communities.”

A total of 751 people applied for the 2018 Bush Fellowship. The 24 Fellows were selected through a multistage process involving Bush Fellowship alumni, Bush Foundation staff and regional leaders. Applicants described their leadership vision and passion and explained how a Bush Fellowship would help them achieve their goals.
