Sioux Falls building permits remain behind 2023 pace

Aug. 1, 2024

City building activity is more than halfway to $1 billion for the year, but remains off last year’s pace.

Through July, building permits totaled $542.5 million, compared with $645.3 million a year ago and more than $1 billion two years ago, which ended up being the city’s record year at just shy of $2 billion.

Chief zoning official Butch Warrington compared the activity in his office to “kind of like the popcorn showers that we have been getting as of late,” he said. “A good or great week and then a cool-off.”

However, he’s still predicting a solid year.

New construction totaled $273.5 million, compared with $337.5 million last year.

New residential construction also is ahead of last year, totaling $112.8 million, compared with $94.3 million. That represents 331 single-family houses, compared with 235 last year and 507 two years ago.

The city has issued building permits for 574 multifamily units so far this year, compared with 1,175 for the same time last year and 2,400 the same time two years ago.

Major projects for July include:

  • T&T Granite & Quartz, showroom and warehouse at 1801 N. Tillie Ave., $5.1 million.
  • 605 Orthodontics at 5901 E. 26th St., $2.4 million.
  • Fourplex complex of three buildings at 5700 E. High Noon Place, $2.3 million
