Seafood retailer, wholesaler expanding to Sioux Falls

By Jodi Schwan

Dakota Seafood Co. is expanding from Rapid City to Sioux Falls.

The retail and wholesale distributor of fresh seafood plans to open this summer in the former Cleaver’s Market at the Bridges at 57th. Cleaver’s is getting out of retail to focus on catering.

Dakota Seafood Co. opened in Rapid City in 2015.

“We have a retail storefront and then sell and deliver to the local restaurants, country clubs and catering companies,” partner Eric Sharpe said.

“We buy directly from the docks so our product is different every day. We support smaller fisheries around the globe offering sustainable seasonal seafood, so checking back daily isn’t a bad idea.”

The business takes special orders without additional fees. Generally, orders placed by 11 a.m. arrive the following day, Sharpe said.

He added he liked the visibility of the new space in Sioux Falls and the close access to J.J.’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars for wine and spirit pairings.

Dakota Seafood is looking to hire up to 12 people. Sharpe said retail experience, food service background and knowledge of seafood is helpful, but not required.

“We have great hours, and a chance for people who love food and like to share their knowledge to shine.”
