Restaurant Roundup: Taco Ride returns, traveling vegan BBQ truck

July 8, 2021

A summertime tradition, the Sioux Falls Taco Ride, is back for its first ride after missing a year because of the pandemic. Everyone is invited to join in the free event Thursday, July 15. The group will meet at 6 p.m. in the Roosevelt High School parking lot and go on a casual 8-mile bike ride that will finish at Giliberto’s Mexican Taco Shop across the street from the school.

A traveling food truck that specializes in vegan barbecue will be at Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars next week. Southern Fried Vegan will be at the downtown taproom from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. According to an event posting on social media, menu highlights include fried “chickun,” barbecue, mac n “cheeze,” jambalaya, Cajun corn, beer “cheeze”-battered Beyond burgers and totchos.

22Ten Kitchen Cocktails has new featured menus for lunch and dinner. One of the highlights for lunch is a gluten-free option. The Queen flatbread has a sweet potato crust with herb oil, pickled red onion, arugula, roasted fennel, chevre and balsamic glaze. For lunch and dinner, the Mighty Mayda Bowl has cold rice noodles seasoned with sesame oil, split shrimp, pickled red onion, carrot, bell pepper and field greens with a Thai chili vinaigrette. The dinner menu includes the Phenomenon, a wagyu beef patty on a brioche bun with grilled pineapple and jalapeno cream cheese. Dessert takes a tropical twist too with the Alana Split: vanilla ice cream, pineapple, fried coconut cream cheese bites, bruleed banana, candied almonds and rum caramel.

Long lines in the drive-thru at some of the B&G Milkyways should be getting shorter. The seasonal ice cream shops on East 41st Street and at 69th and Louise are the first in the local chain to reopen their lobbies, which closed in spring 2020 because of the pandemic. The lobby at East 41st is open all the time, and the one at 69th is open from 6 p.m. to close. Each owner is making decisions about the lobbies. In Tea, the lobby likely won’t reopen this year because of staffing issues, owner Diane Larson said. Brandon’s lobby will reopen at some point, but Sycamore’s will not. That location has outgrown the building and is using the lobby area for extra storage, co-owner Kasey Iverson said. West 41st Street won’t reopen this year, owner Bruce Bettmeng said. With all employees working on drive-thru orders, cars are moving quickly through the line, he said. West 12th is a walk-up-only location.

Kaladi’s Bistro is now serving cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and other baked goods made by Berdene’s Homemade Desserts. Berdene Whipkey, who has a commercial kitchen in her home, started making wedding cakes 30 years ago when she lived in Le Mars, Iowa. She moved to Sioux Falls seven years ago and has been taking custom orders and also making desserts for Camille’s Sidewalk Café, whose owners recently bought Kaladi’s. “I go through about 40 pounds of flour and sugar in a week,” she said. “Everything is made from scratch.” Whipkey also sells homemade ice cream and slices of cheesecake and cake every Thursday night at Strawbale Winery’s live music series. Find info about her business on her website or Facebook page.

CNC Food Factory, which has earned a following with its baked doughnuts and gluten-free versions, has created another gluten-free recipe that is also dairy-free and egg-free. They’re available Fridays and Saturdays or by special order in three varieties: cinnamon sugar, vanilla or chocolate. More flavors are coming.

IHOP is celebrating its 1958 “panniversary” with 58-cent short stacks from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Quick note for On the Hook Fish & Chips fans: The traveling food truck will be in Sioux Falls from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday in its regular spot at Tractor Supply Co. on North Cliff Avenue.
