Lucky’s to open south Sioux Falls location next week

July 14, 2023

Lucky’s plans to open its second Sioux Falls location next week.

The downtown bar is expanding into the former Cody’s Smokehouse BBQ building at 6401 S. Louise Ave. There will be some invite-only hours early in the week, and opening day is set for Wednesday.

It was purchased by Cresten Capital, which already has made improvements and has more to come.

“It’s been a transformation,” Cresten founder and CEO Kevin Tupy said. “We’re really excited about it, and we’ve gotten such positive feedback. The neighborhood and the area have reached out through social media and to our employees letting us know how welcome we are out there.”

Cresten has remodeled much of the building already, including walls, all new furniture and new games. There are pool tables, darts, arcade games, foosball, and they’re looking at adding more, said Michelle Gilberts, who has served as general manager of the downtown location and is a partner in the south Sioux Falls one.

“We have 46 TVs up, so a lot, and with that we also added two garage doors and added the patio and extended it by adding a turf area,” she said.

The patio is ready to go, with bean bags and Jenga on the turf and potentially live music ahead, she said.

“We have been moving very fast,” Gilberts said. “And the casino is open and has been open. We’ve done a little bit of a refresh to the casino, so hopefully everybody will continue to come and we’ll have new customers as well.”

Still to come is an expansion to add a 38-foot bar in the back area that Tupy said will bring high-tech enhancements. It’s expected to be ready in six to eight weeks.

The Ode family is working with Lucky’s to run the food and beverage service and use the kitchen for catering. The brothers also own Crawford’s Bar & Grill downtown and are partners in Wagoo Burger at Fernson Downtown.

“It’s more upscale bar food,” Gilbert said. “They have a little bit of a twist to them as most people are familiar with Crawford’s.”

Here’s a look at the menu:

As for beverages, there are 16 beers on tap, “so we will carry several local taps and will continuously rotate seasonal to bring in everything new,” Gilberts said.

“We even have a little surprise where we have a Patron margarita. You can spin and make your own margarita.”

Hiring has been “amazing,” she added. “We are actually fully staffed and will continue to hire because of the expansion to the future bar.”

Lucky’s will open at 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday. Closing time will be anywhere from midnight to 2 a.m. depending on the crowd.

All ages are welcome until 8 p.m. — after that it’s open to those 21 and older.
