Restaurant Roundup: From Sub Zero Desserts to Polar Bites, new ice cream treats, ‘Willow Wonka’

After receiving a cease-and-desist letter, Sub Zero Desserts is getting a new name. Jessica Rooney said she and her husband, Matthew, decided to rename their almost 4-year-old business Polar Bites. Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream, which was founded in 2004 and began franchising in 2005, took offense to the name. In 2013, the owners appeared on “Shark Tank” and failed to secure a deal but were named an Entrepreneur magazine Top 500 Franchise that year. It has 30 locations across the U.S., mostly in Florida and Massachusetts. The closest one is in a Kansas City suburb. The Rooney’s original frozen treat mobile business, Dakota Snow, will keep its name.

Stensland Family Farms has revamped its menu for the first time since the original store opened six years ago. Some of the new items are an ice-cream stuffed doughnut, churro sundae, strawberry cheesecake sundae, banana split nachos, a Brown Cow float, milk tea floats and affogato, which is a scoop of ice cream in espresso. New beverages include Italian cream sodas, Lotus Energy and coffee drinks.

Diners at Harvester Kitchen by Bryan get a special treat on Wednesdays. The pastry chef offers Willow Wonka Wednesday, a selection of complimentary sweet treats ranging from rich chocolate desserts to refreshing fruity bites. Enjoy your treats with your meal, or take them home to eat later.

Chef Lance’s on Phillips introduced its spring menu earlier this month. Popular entrees include Jenny’s Filet With Scallops, the Farmhouse Pork Ribeye and the Mac-and-Cheese flight. It features three servings: chicken bacon, barbecue pulled pork and lobster herb. The new appetizer is baked scallops.

R Wine Bar & Kitchen has introduced its April features. The appetizer is smoked salmon crostini and the entree is Agnello: lamb chops with mint pesto spaghetti. The dessert Torta di Nocciole, a hazelnut cake with Nutella whipped cream.

Salas Salsas continues its monthly offering of Mexican foods that begin with the letter T on Tuesday at Full Circle Book Co-op. Tamales will be served from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Loteria, or Mexican bingo, also will be played, with prizes including drink tokens, tamales and salsas. For future planning, the menu includes tacos May 16, tostadas June 20, tortas July 18, taquitos Aug. 15, tlacoyos Sept. 19 and tlayudas Oct. 17.

If you want to learn how to make your own tamales, Marcela Salas and her mom, Patricia Burbine, of Salas Salsas are offering a class at 2 p.m. April 29 at A Homestead Brew, east of Sioux Falls. The class is $70, and participants will get a dozen tamales and salsa to take home along with an information packet with recipes. They’ll also get two beverages. Sign up here. 

Earlier this week, the traveling food truck On the Hook Fish & Chips made stops in Brookings, Pierre and Mitchell, and Friday, it will be in Sioux Falls. Find it at Tractor Supply Co. on North Cliff Avenue from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Lupulin Brewing Co. has released its Pink Boots Society collaboration brew. Flamingo in a Flock of Pigeons is a pale ale fruited with peach and raspberry. It’s available on tap and in crowlers. A portion of proceeds will go to the national group and the South Dakota chapter.

Roam Kitchen + Bar is celebrating the Kentucky Derby early with $5 juleps through the race May 6. There are two kinds: Burnt Rosemary or Fresh Mint. Each purchase gets you a chance to win a bottle of Roam Maker’s Cask Private Select Bourbon. The drawing will be at 4 p.m. race day, and you must be present to win.

TC’s Referee Sports Bar & Drink has concocted a spring drink menu.

Changes in hours, service

  • Remedy Brewing Co. has extended closing time to 10 p.m. during the week. New hours are noon to 10 p.m. Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to midnight Friday and Saturday.
  • Squealer’s Smoke Shack in Tea has discontinued its weekend breakfast hours until the fall. It opens now at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Monday hours will return May 1, along with a spring bean bag league that night. There’s also one on Thursday nights starting April 27. Both leagues, which will play for four weeks, have a few more spots for teams.
