Police wellness specialist helps those who serve live healthier lives

Jan. 23, 2024

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Lindsey Mossman, a wellness specialist at the Sioux Falls Police Department.

Name: Lindsey Mossman

Age: 25

Hometown: Belleville, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I earned my bachelor’s degree and played softball for the University of Sioux Falls and fell in love with Sioux Falls. Go Coo!

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

I have moved to Sioux Falls twice: once for college and once to start my career. The city is flourishing and has everything you could ever need. The culture of Sioux Falls is unmatched to any place I have lived before, and I have loved to watch it grow.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Getting to interact with so many people. I am a people person, and I love to help people live healthier, fuller lives. Working for the SFPD and the city of Sioux Falls, I get to broaden my scope a bit more and make a lot of connections. The city is a great place to work.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I worked for the city in their Parks & Recreation Department while I was in college. However, I had no connections with the Police Department or any tactical population prior to getting this job. I think that my educational experience at USF and UMary in Bismarck, North Dakota, helped me immensely with the internships and practicums they provided for me. I also got lucky with the mentors I have had along my journey and have gotten to learn so much from so many different people.

Describe your workplace in three words.

Dynamic. Humanistic. Fun!

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I used to be incredibly shy — to the point I hid under a chair on the first day of kindergarten. I didn’t get over my shyness until college! Now, I will talk to anyone and enjoy public speaking.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

Time is the most precious gift someone can give. I help coach a youth softball team and like to find other volunteer events to participate in. Being out in the Sioux Falls community is refreshing, and getting to help run some of the events in Sioux Falls makes it even better.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

We already have so many great businesses, but it would be nice to have an indoor dog park. My chiweenie would absolutely love that.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

Honestly, I want to own a fun coffee bar that is chemistry themed — beakers for glasses, neon chemical skeletal formula lights on the wall and science puns galore. It would be a very niche type of place, but I think it would be incredibly fun for my fellow science lovers.
