New food truck features churro bites, ice cream
May 29, 2024
A new truck from the owner of Breaking Burrito features churro bites, ice cream and traditional Mexican drinks.
Mr. Churro made its debut in mid-May at an elementary school, followed by a pop-up at a business and then last week’s Food Truck Tuesday at Golf Addiction.

Carlos Salgado’s latest offering features made-from-scratch churro bites that are fried on the truck and homemade ice cream.
Customers can order traditional cinnamon and sugar bites or ones topped with ice cream, dulce de leche, condensed milk or chocolate syrup, Salgado said.

Ice cream flavors include vanilla and chocolate and a couple of rotating choices like cookies and cream, coffee and green tea.
“Whatever flavors I want, I can make it,” Salgado said.
Mr. Churro also serves Mexican drinks like coffee con leche and agua fresca.

Salgado remembers drinking coffee with milk when he was a child and his family would go from California to Mexico to visit his grandmother.
“She made us that. It’s kind of simple, but I like it. Not everybody is going to like it, but a lot of people probably will. … It will be sweet and strong on the coffee part.”
Salgado actually lived with his grandmother for a year when he was 7 or 8.
“That’s kind of how I learned to cook,” he said.

He eventually moved from California to New York, where he met his future wife, who was from Sioux Falls. Salgado moved here in 2015 and started Breaking Burrito in 2016. He added a second food truck in 2022.
Unlike the “Breaking Bad”-themed Breaking Burrito black truck and the white one, Mr. Churro is appropriately bright pink for a truck selling sweets. It’s available to book for public and private events.
