Midcentury modern apartments planned in renovated building near downtown

June 29, 2018

The downtown developers who own The Carpenter Building and Carpenter Bar are bringing a midcentury style to an apartment building in the All Saints neighborhood.

It’s called The Edge on Main and is located at 638 S. Main Ave.

“We’ll be doing a total renovation,” co-owner Anne Haber  said. “The building has a lot of potential. The All Saints neighborhood is wonderful, and you can see downtown as it’s just two blocks south. It’s a really fabulous location.”

There will be 20 one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom. The units are receiving new flooring, paint, plumbing and finishes.

“It will essentially be brand-new inside but with a midcentury shell,” Haber said. “The building itself is midcentury, and we’re trying to keep it true to the time in which it was built.”

The building previously was called Imperial Apartments. The exterior will be completely redone, including a patio, large parking lot and new landscaping.

Inside, the finishes, lighting and colors will have a midcentury look that complements the building, which was built in the 1960s.

“The building will be especially pet-friendly,” Haber said. “It’s a wonderful area for walking dogs, close to so many dog-friendly places downtown, and we’ll have a yard behind the building for them as well.”

Rents will start around $800 per month, she said.

“Sometimes we know people would love to live downtown, but it just doesn’t seem as accessible,” she said. “This is a more accessible size and price point but completely brand-new and within sight of the Washington Pavilion. We just felt it was a really good opportunity to bring life to an older building in a neighborhood with a vibe we really like.”

The apartments are expected to be ready in early fall. Interested tenants can call 605-351-8306.

“We’ll continue the same management approach as we have at The Carpenter,” Haber said of the building that offers apartments along with retail and office space. “We’re a family-owned company, and that’s the feel and service we provide.”
