Longtime yarn shop to close after 16 years

Jan. 21, 2022

A yarn shop located in a Victorian-style house in central Sioux Falls is closing.

Sunday will be the final day for Athena Fibers, which also served as a community for those who like to knit, crochet and do other types of fiber work.

“It’s time,” owner Lauri Harris said. “My boys are grown, and it’s time for a new adventure.”

Originally, there were three owners when the business opened in September 2005 at 3915 S. Hawthorne Ave. Harris remains as the sole owner.

In addition to selling supplies, Athena Fibers offered classes. Enthusiasts also would gather on Sunday afternoons and Thursday nights to craft and talk, gathering on the big wraparound porch in the summer and by the fireplace in the winter.

“It’s a wonderful group of folks,” Harris said.

Final hours are until 5 p.m. today and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Harris put the building on the market and didn’t set a closing date for the business until finding a buyer. The property is under contract.

The house was built in 1890 in the neighborhood surrounding St. Joseph’s Cathedral. It was being used as a Methodist Church parsonage before it was moved to the site on Hawthorne in 1954, said Cindy Oyen, a Realtor for Ameri/Star Real Estate who has the listing. Before Athena Fibers opened, the property served as The Parsonage Victorian Tea Room.
