With just a few minutes, a smartphone and a little extra motivation, team members at Silverstar Car Wash are finding training has become easier and even fun.

The company launched a mobile training platform that has been a fast success.

“With this approach, we’re keeping employees current while not bogging them down,” said Andrea Vetos, Silverstar operations director.

“It’s a great resource in addition to our training manuals that’s creating consistency as we’ve grown to nearly 20 sites across four states and anticipate future growth.”

Most careers require some kind of ongoing training, and with this approach, team members embrace the changes.

“The response has been great,” said Jordan Shuman, company trainer. “Team members and site managers enjoy how quick and easy it is to complete, and a dashboard makes it simple for me to see at a glance how many team members have completed courses.”

The micro-courses are designed to be completed in three to five minutes via smartphone and are delivered via text message or an app.

“This makes it simple for our team members to complete before they jump in to work, during a break or after they swap shifts,” Shuman said. “It could be something like our initial safety video, which all team members watch, or more specific content like a micro-course on summer bug prep that we sent out recently.”

Shuman began his Silverstar career in 2014 as a part-time wash attendant while still in high school. He has grown with the company as an assistant manager, site manager and maintenance technician while earning his business administration degree at Southeast Tech.

“I recognized a need for standardized training to keep consistency across our sites as we grow,” he said. “That was when I was placed into the company trainer role. I now create, train and develop processes and procedures across our nearly 20 locations.”

To incentivize employees to complete their training, Silverstar rewards those who finish the courses on time at quarterly celebrations.

“We held the first one a couple months ago, and our teams had a blast,” Shuman said. “We had a lot of team members set goals to earn a specific reward at a future event.”

All team members current on training received a certificate and gift card. Other distinctions included:

  • Wash Bay Boss, the person who sets the standard as a wash attendant based on grade sheets and customer feedback.
  • Maintenance Master, the person who made an impression with their maintenance and repairs knowledge. Nearly all Silverstar maintenance and repair is handled on-site by crews based there.
  • Commission Champ, the top sales person for the quarter.
  • People’s Choice, the team member who received the most shout-outs in email, social media and customer surveys.
  • Market MVP, winner of the “wrestling belt” as “the person who is crushing it in the market – exemplifying our core values and setting the standard for our team,” Vetos said.

They all received $50 gift cards and trophies.

“One of the big things that sets Silverstar apart is the focus on growing people,” Shuman said. “One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing team members join Silverstar and grow with us.”

In Sioux Falls, eight out of 10 site managers started as a cashier or wash attendant and grew by following Silverstar’s career path, he said.

“We are constantly growing and improving the training tools we have to better serve our team members and prepare them to grow within Silverstar as Silverstar continues to grow.”
