City building activity edges ahead of two years ago

Sioux Falls building activity has edged ahead of two years ago though it’s still far behind the record-setting 2022.

Through September, permits totaled $881.8 million, up from $868.2 million in 2021 and behind the $1.7 billion in permits issued in 2022.

Large projects that were issued permits last month include a new apartment complex from Signature Cos. on the southwest corner of Benson and Marion roads at $22 million, the new northwest elementary school for the Sioux Falls School District at $21.9 million and an addition to Xcel Energy at 1401 N. Minnesota Ave. valued at $20.4 million.

Overall, new commercial activity is solidly ahead of two years ago at $453.5 millionb compared with $330.8 million, though behind last year when it was more than $1 billion.

Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $197.6 million through the third quarter, compared with $315.4 million last year and $235.6 million two years ago.

Residential activity continues to lag behind the past two years, with new construction totaling $150.4 million through September, compared with $216.6 million last year and $246.5 million in 2021. Permits have been issued for 349 new single-family homes, compared with 593 for the same time last year and 390 two years ago. Multifamily units total 1,553 apartments, compared with 3,255 last year and 1,592 two years ago.

Residential remodeling is also behind last year at $80.3 million, compared with $106.8 million in 2022 and $55.4 million in 2021.
