Great Plains Zoo raising funds to bring back lions

April 18, 2018

Lions will hopefully be returning to the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum.

Fundraising has started through the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce appeal program to raise an initial $1.41 million toward the $5 million project.

It will include up-close viewing for a full pride of as many as 10 lions, including cubs.

Lions have been a much-requested addition to the zoo’s more than 1,000 animals. There were lions at the zoo years ago.

The lion project also would add expanded viewing and cafe seating at the Maasai Market Cafe, allowing diners to watch animals while eating. Other features include:

  • African kopje — small rocky hill — habitat and yard
  • Holding and viewing building
  • Lion training demonstration area
  • Enhanced seating and views into animal habitats

The chamber fundraising campaign runs through July 31.
