Downtown restaurant suspends lunch service

Oct. 19, 2021

A downtown restaurant has suspended lunch service but will continue to be open for bakery and take-and-bake sales.

The Cookie Jar Eatery owners Glen and Elaine Koch notified customers in an email this morning.

“With the holidays fast approaching, grocery bills on the rise and a labor shortage, we have come to the difficult decision that we can no longer serve a daily lunch until further notice,” they wrote.

“We are beyond excited to add Young & Richards’ fudge to our offerings and will continue to make cookies, cakes, pies, bread, lefse and our popular food items on our family-style menu like soup by the gallon or take-n-bake cinnamon rolls.”

Customers also will be able to get the two most popular soups – chili and chicken tortilla – in single servings in microwavable bowls to go, Glen Koch said.

The Cookie Jar, which is in Shriver Square at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue, had been serving lunch Tuesday through Friday.

They have been trying to hire a front of house leader “basically for a year now,” Koch said. A college student helped during the summer but has returned to school.

Hours will continue to be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
