Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
The west-side thrift store for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will open Jan. 2. Hours for the store at 3000 S. Ellis Road will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The franchisee of Kid to Kid is adding a second resale store – this one focused on teens and young adults. Uptown Cheapskate will be next to Kid to Kid in the Western Mall, replacing Crystal Rock Healing, which has moved to an interior space at the mall. Uptown Cheapskate is expected to open in May.
Juice Stop is moving the smoothie shop at 57th Street and Cliff Avenue farther south to a new retail center that offers a drive-thru. The location on 57th will remain open until just before the space at 1404 W. 69th St. is ready, which will be March 1 or sooner, owner Troy Jansma said.
One year after opening, Altered Species Ales is now brewing its own beer and earlier this month released its first offerings. The brewery is in the back of the taproom on the south side of the Western Mall.
Co-op Architecture and Fresh Produce now both have offices in the historic Carnegie Library in downtown Rapid City. Co-op, which also has offices in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, has owned the building since 2022 but just moved its Rapid City office into the space. For Sioux Falls-based Fresh Produce, it’s an expansion to another market.
The food truck Taqueria Juanita is expanding into a restaurant at 923 S. Marion Road. Juana Silva Cortez and her husband, Miguel Silva Rodriguez, wanted to offer their customers a year-round option. It’s expected to open early next year. The couple will keep the food truck and plans to use it initially for larger special events.
The owners of Parks Marina plan to sell several of their other businesses at Okoboji in northwest Iowa, including Central Emporium, Okoboji Boat Works, O’Farrell Sisters restaurant, property adjacent to Brooks Golf Club and some residential properties. Butch and Debbie Parks will continue to own Parks Marina, including the location in Sioux Falls, and The Barefoot Bar adjacent to the Okoboji location.
Artist Ellen Clauson has opened El’s Gallery at 330 S. Phillips Ave. The store includes her paintings and a mix of pieces by established regional artists and new up-and-coming artists. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday.
The owners of a food truck that got its start headed into winter hope to draw diners with their made-from-scratch menu of “fluffy” tacos, triple-cooked fries and soups. Friends Tanner Simpson and Suz Hoff, who worked together in Sioux Falls restaurants for several years, have started Put It in Your Mouth. They post locations on Facebook and Street Food Finder.
The last day in business for Obscure Brewing Co. will be Dec. 28. The locally owned brewery at 5200 E. Grant St. opened in 2019.
The newest Wingstop in Sioux Falls has opened in a retail center at 3605 W. 57th St. The locally owned franchise serves bone-in and boneless wings with 13 flavors of varying spiciness, chicken sandwiches that are tossed in sauce and tenders with a dipping sauce. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight daily.
A Mexican restaurant featuring seafood is taking over the former east-side Keg location. La Playita, or “The Little Beach,” will feature the cooking of Yvonne Alvarez, who with her husband, Javier Solis Sr., operated a similar restaurant in Playa Azul, Mexico. The couple and their sons are renovating the space at 5216 E. Arrowhead Parkway and hope to open early next year.
Fair Market, which sells reduced-price groceries, is consolidating its two retail stores into one space – the former Family Dollar at 2511 S. Minnesota Ave. The location at 523 N. Kiwanis Ave. closed in mid-December, and the store at 4510 E. 10th St. will close at a later date. The new Minnesota Avenue store is open Monday through Saturday.
Big Poppa’s Pizza has opened at 2300 S. Minnesota Ave., featuring Chicago-style deep-dish and New York-style hand-tossed pizzas. Owner Tony Axtell, who also operates Big Poppa’s Food Truck and On the Spot Catering, plans to expand the menu in the new year to include pastas. It’s open daily.
