Children’s resale store owner to expand with second concept

Dec. 9, 2024

The franchisee of Kid to Kid is adding a second store — this one focused on young adults.

Alexa Goodroad opened the children’s resale shop, which sells kids’ clothes and toys, earlier this year at the Western Mall.

When the space adjacent to her became a possibility, it was the incentive she needed to expand her retail presence with a second store.

Uptown Cheapskate, which is from the same parent company, focuses on apparel, shoes and accessories namely for teens and young adults.

“Those opportunities don’t come often, so we’re definitely excited,” Goodroad said. “They’ll actually be connected, so you can get to us from the interior (of the Western Mall).”

She sees that as especially convenient for parents taking kids to music lessons or 605 Ninja, as well as customers going to movies in the building.

The space currently is occupied by Crystal Rock Healing, which opened in 2021 and is moving to an interior space at the Western Mall. Its final day in the current location will be Dec. 31.

Uptown Cheapskate uses a similar resale model as Kid to Kid, offering to buy from customers for cash or store credit, which includes a 25 percent bonus — a bit more than Kid to Kid’s 20 percent.

The store will offer merchandise for men and women with “the same type of upscale shopping,” Goodroad said. “When people walk into Kid to Kid, the franchise said they shouldn’t know it’s used clothing. The goal is people walk in and they think it’s like a boutique experience.”

There’s a small section for teens at Kid to Kid, so people are “selling us clothes already, so this will be a good transition,” she said.

Brands that are especially sought-after include Anthropologie, lululemon, Madewell, Brandy Melville, Vans, American Eagle, Nike and Free People.

Goodroad plans to start buying from customers likely in March for an opening in May.
