Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Sports bar Let It Fly has closed after three years in business at The Bridges at 57th development in south Sioux Falls. “This decision was not made lightly, and it comes after careful consideration of how to best utilize our resources to build the Let It Fly franchise at our other locations,” the business said in a statement. Let It Fly has opened two locations in the Omaha area since 2023. A restaurant in a Memphis suburb in Mississippi is under construction, according to news reports in July. The original location in another Memphis suburb closed in late 2023.
Spring Creek Golf Course is for sale. The 126-acre, 18-hole course southeast of Sioux Falls was built in 1994 and sits along the Big Sioux River adjacent to Good Earth State Park at Blood Run. It was purchased under a contract for deed by the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation from Spring Creek County Club Inc., which was given a 10-year lease to operate it. That agreement ends next year, and the state is no longer interested in making the golf course or the land part of Good Earth.
The first nontribal dispensary to open after South Dakota legalized marijuana for medical use is closing. Unity Rd., which opened in July 2022 in Hartford, announced its last day will be Dec. 7. An adjacent business, The Hartford Connection, will close on the same day. It offers alternative health products such as nicotine disposables, CBD oils, lotions and gummies.
A Mexican food truck on West 12th Street has found a home that will allow it to operate year-round. Taqueria la Jarochita is leasing a former video lottery casino site at 5005 W. 12th St., just a few blocks west of the parking lot where it had been based since 2021. Customers order inside, where there is seating for about 30 diners, and the tacos, burritos and more are prepared in the food truck parked outside. It’s open daily.
CJ Schwan’s, also known as Schwan’s Co., officially has started work on a 142-acre project to bring an Asian food production facility to Sioux Falls. The 700,000-square-foot building will be one of the world’s largest Asian food factories, spanning the length of more than 12 football fields at Foundation Park in northwest Sioux Falls. It will support the company’s bibigo brand, making egg rolls and steamed dumplings. Vertical construction is expected to start next year, with an opening in 2027.
Sanford Health is buying Black Hills Surgical Hospital and Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center in Rapid City, along with other associated facilities there and Black Hills Surgery Center in Wyoming. The medical centers currently are physician-owned and will transition to nonprofit status as they start operating as part of Sanford.
Dollar Tree is opening two more stores in Sioux Falls. The site at Lake Lorraine will be in an existing retail center. The discount retail chain is building a store on land in front of Fleet Farm at the Sanford Sports Complex. Both locations are expected to open next year.
The owner of Big Poppa’s Food Truck is opening a pizzeria on Minnesota Avenue. Big Poppa’s Pizza will fill the former Bella Cucina space at 2300 S. Minnesota Ave. Owner Anthony Axtell plans to open in December and said the menu will focus on hand-tossed and Chicago-style pizzas.
Family-owned auto dealer Schulte Subaru has become part of Minnesota’s largest dealership. The second-generation business sold earlier this month to Twin Cities-based Luther Automotive Group. The Schultes are launching AutoWerks Foreign and Classic Repair and Sales, with a new location at 1725 Mindy St. in Tea. In addition to restoring classic cars, AutoWerks will service imported vehicles and offer marine and automotive upholstery services. It also will provide storage for up to 100 vehicles. They plan to begin repair work soon and be fully operational in the new location by early next year.
Seasonal retailers have started opening at The Empire Mall for the holidays.
The Sanford Virtual Care Center has opened near the Sanford Sports Complex, offering a centralized location for Sanford Health teams to collaborate on strategy for the future of health care delivery. There’s a maker lab for product innovation, along with collaborative and accelerator spaces for innovation partners and startups. An education institute has been built with multiple classrooms and areas to train on virtual and augmented reality. The building at 3001 W. Opportunity Drive is home to Sanford’s clinical call center, which helps refer patients to the best care option in the health system. The Virtual Care Center also will be home to Sanford’s direct-to-consumer acute care — the virtual visits requested through Sanford’s MyChart — and it’s likely a virtual nursing service also will be located in the building.
A new fast-casual restaurant specializing in egg sandwiches that has gotten a lot of buzz in the Twin Cities is coming to Sioux Falls. Egg on a Roll plans to open in March 2025 at The Bridges at 57th in the retail building that includes Flyboy Donuts.
Luxe Falls Venue is coming early next year to 2517 S. Shirley Ave. It will focus on hosting weddings but can be rented for all types of events. The space, which was a former YMCA location, can hold 260 people, but the setup for tables and chairs will seat 200 people. The venue will have suites for the bride and the groom, a bar, dance floor and stage.
Pizza Cheeks is expanding with a full-service restaurant, taking over the former Kaladi’s Bistro space. Owners Barry Putzke and Jordan Taylor are remodeling the location at 26th Street and Minnesota Avenue and working on a menu that will expand with pasta dishes and more options for pizzas, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. They’re shooting for an opening by the end of the year or early next year. The business partners opened Pizza Cheeks in late 2020 out of a small kitchen in the downtown cocktail bar The Hello Hi. That location will remain open and likely will sell only pizza by the slice.
Casa del Rey reopened Monday under new ownership. The Eining family is starting with a condensed menu but plans to expand that in a few weeks. Hours for the longtime restaurant at 901 W. Russell St. are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
DQ Grill & Chill has opened in Harrisburg at 102 N. Cliff Ave. in front of Fareway. It’s franchisee Fourteen Foods’ ninth restaurant in the Sioux Falls area. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
