Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

The Family Dollar store in Beresford is scheduled to close April 20 — one of 600 stores its parent company plans to close this month. At least three other Family Dollar stores in the state are closing: Reliance, Lemmon and Spearfish.

Sioux Falls-based Aerostar International LLC, which is part of TCOM Holdings, has acquired an Oregon-based company with expertise in high-altitude flight testing and complex aerospace soft goods designs. Near Space Corp. was founded in 1996 and also manages the Tillamook Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Range, one of seven FAA-designated UAS testing locations in the United States.

LifeScape is building a 185,000-square-foot facility that will centralize and expand its capacity for children’s services. The estimated $88 million first phase of the campus is at the northeast corner of 34th Street North and Career Avenue. The nonprofit organization that serves adults and children purchased 10 acres and will relocate its 26th Street children’s specialty hospital, residential and school location there, likely in 2026. Future phases of the project will add a gymnasium, therapy pool and family meeting areas, an additional building for services and an area for housing.

Conner McMahan’s new North End Bakery & Deli is taking over the former ‘Brosia Bowl space in the Jones421 Building on North Phillips Avenue. He will sell sourdough bread and serve breakfast and lunch. His goal is to open in early May.

Thornton Flooring has moved into its new 109,000-square-foot building in Tea’s Bakker Landing development. The showroom floor features galleries with products on display and spaces where team members and customers can meet. Thornton also was able to consolidate five warehouses into the new space at 2300 Bakker Landing Ave.

A locally owned gourmet soda shop is opening a second location – this one in southwest Sioux Falls. SoDak Soda is taking over the former Stensland Family Farms space in the shared location at 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue with Flyboy Donuts. It might be ready to open sometime in May.

The franchise owner of Cookie Co. is closing the south Sioux Falls bakery later this month. “It was out of our control. … At a corporate level, it just was not working out,” said Sarah Storm, who opened the shop at 6004 S. Cliff Ave. in February 2023. The final day will be April 27.

Allure Health has ended its clinic operation, and the building has gone on the market for sale. Allure Health opened in mid-2022 in a new building at 7000 S. Lyncrest Place. It included a relocation of Storm Clinic in addition to an IV business, fitness center and bar.

Roy’zzz Premium Cannabis has opened at 2520 S. Louise Ave. It’s owned by Roy Nielsen, who also has a medical marijuana dispensary in Yankton.

Big Lost Meadery, a Wyoming-based producer of mead, is expanding to Sioux Falls with a bar, brewery and Ranch & Roost restaurant. The nearly 9,500-square-foot, two-story project will be on lakefront property at Lake Lorraine between Hyatt Place and The Blu on Lorraine. The projected opening is early next year.

Polar Bites has reopened its shop at 401 E. Eighth St. after being closed for the winter and has added sandwiches, soups and soft-serve ice cream to the menu of rolled ice cream and other frozen treats. To start, hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. The original seasonal location for Polar Bites is expected to open in early May. It’s in a modified shipping container at 501 E. 41st St.

The Root Cellar at 701 N. Phillips Ave. has closed, and the space is listed for lease. The convenience store along the boardwalk of The Cascade at Falls Park apartment building opened in 2020.

Happy Dog Hideaway has added dog training. Trainer Hannah Godfrey is certified through the CATCH Canine Trainers Academy.
