Architect embraces turning creative ideas into tangible spaces

Feb. 14, 2023

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Jason Kann, an associate principal architect at Co-op Architecture.

Name: Jason Kann

Age: 37

Hometown: Watertown

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I grew up in South Dakota. I went to college out of state and then moved around for a bit. Eventually, my wife and I had our first two children, and we were looking for the right place to raise our kids. We wanted to be closer to family in a community that aligned well with us and where we could put down roots.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

The people. I love the friends we have made and the people I work with. I work in a field that exposes me to a lot of amazing people who are striving to help this community succeed however they can. That is a really amazing thing to see, and getting to be a part of that process is awesome!

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love the interesting challenges we get tackle. It is extremely fulfilling to go through the creative process and help people take their ideas and turn them into actual, tangible spaces. Each project is different, and with each one we get to learn about different people, companies and communities. Taking that knowledge and helping them create spaces that improve their quality of life is incredibly rewarding.

How did you get connected to your industry?

Growing up, I was always very imaginative. I loved to build and create, and I know I would have gone into some sort of creative field. In sixth grade, I had the opportunity to tour the only architecture firm in Watertown, and that settled it. I loved everything about it, and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to be an architect!

Describe your workplace in three words.

Really. Good. Designers.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I didn’t learn how to whistle until I was in my 30s. I had accidentally whistled here or there, but I couldn’t whistle on command. My kids would tell you that I whistle too much now.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I love to donate my time and am very happy to help out in any way I can, but I really like to work with my hands and create something.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I’ll go with Raising Cane’s.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

Probably a custom woodworking shop. I still love building and creating, and there is an incredible amount of design and craftsmanship that goes into custom woodwork. Honestly, I spend way too much time watching woodworking videos on YouTube. I could use the shop time to see if I’ve actually learned anything from them!
