Banking meets barbecue for branch manager, entrepreneur

March 12, 2024

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Zach Scott, loan officer and branch manager at Reliabank.

Name: Zach Scott

Age: 28

Hometown: Parkston

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I attended college at the University of Sioux Falls, where I received my bachelor’s degree in business administration and management.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

Growing up in a small town, I wanted to have that “small-town feel” for my future family. Even though Sioux Falls is the largest community in South Dakota, it truly feels like a small community.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

One aspect of banking that I cherish most is the emphasis on customer service. The industry continually evolves to meet the diverse needs of its customers, whether it’s the ease of conducting transactions online or the welcoming atmosphere in one of Reliabank’s local branches. Banking, for me, epitomizes a symbiotic relationship between institution and client, where mutual trust and support flourish.

How did you get connected to your industry?

An internship at Reliabank to give the banking industry a try. Multiple family members have had careers in the industry, and I wanted to see if it would be a good fit for me. After the first week on the job, I called my father and told him “I know what I want to do the rest of my life.” The rest is history, and it has been one of the best decisions of my life.

Describe your workplace in three words.

Collaborative, innovative, family.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I am one of the proud owners of 605 Barbecue Co. A group of friends combined our culinary talents and entrepreneurial spirit to create a thriving business. Each of us brings a unique skill set to the table.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

My favorite way to give back to the community is volunteering in different organizations within the Sioux Falls community. I love volunteering with other like-minded individuals who are working to make this city a better place to live and grow. The Young Professionals Network has been a great way for myself and others to work and connect while playing an intricate role in this city’s growth of its young professionals. Young professionals in Sioux Falls are the future of this city, and I’m proud to be a part of an organization that is focusing on the future leaders of this growing community.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I would like to see a Raising Canes come to the Sioux Falls area.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

I would start a storefront of barbecue products under our established brand of 605 Barbecue Co. The venture’s main goal wouldn’t just be about selling food; it’s about sharing a culinary experience and fostering a sense of community around the timeless tradition of barbecue.
