Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
Maynard’s Foods has purchased the Garretson Food Center in Garretson from Ron and Lorie Luke, who owned it for 30 years. The Elkton-based regional grocer plans to double the size of the store this year.
Active Generations has opened a cafe that also serves the public at its east-side location. Simply Good Cafe offers breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at 5500 E. Active Generations Place.
A new building focused on dermatology and plastic surgery is coming to the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center in central Sioux Falls. Work starts this month on the two-story, 52,000-square-foot Medical Building 4, which will be on the northeast corner of 21st Street and Grange Avenue. It’s expected to be completed by the end of next year.
A new business, Modern Meze, is coming to 1524 S. Sycamore Ave. in late July or early August. Owner Sladjana McCord will sell platters with meats and cheeses imported from Europe, along with fruits, vegetables and other small bites. Some products also will be sold separately for people who want to make their own platters. The business also will have a dining component and serve beer and wine. Catering services will be available, and McCord expects to offer classes.
Nick’s Gyros will open its second location in Sioux Falls on June 25. The locally owned restaurant will be at 3501 E. 10th St.
Totally Rad Pizza has opened at 196 E. Sixth St. It’s the latest concept from Fernson Brewing Co. In addition to pizza, the restaurant serves sandwiches, salads, wings and other appetizers. In addition to Fernson’s craft beers, Totally Rad Pizza features cocktails using Fernson’s spirits. The lower-level lounge features pinball machines, arcade games, claw machines, dart boards and a photo booth. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner.
Brooklin Nothdurft is opening Studio B Dance Complex in a 5,600-square-foot space at the Western Mall. It will offer everything from recreational classes for various dance styles and all ages to competitive dance. She hopes to open the studio at the end of the month.
Amber Meyer has opened The Study in the front section of a historic building in downtown Garretson. It serves ice cream and desserts. Abigail Lexen, who owns the building with her husband, Paul, is opening Quartzite Coffee House in the back area, hoping to be fully open by September. She’s planning to start with coffee and baked goods and expand into a cafe by next year.
Black Watch, a luxury watch store and speakeasy/restaurant has opened at 202 S. Phillips Ave. The social club is open to the public, but a membership option is coming to provide additional benefits. The owners, who also operate the nearby Crawford’s Bar & Grill, plan to expand into the adjacent space to the south to offer additional seating areas and expand the kitchen. The business opens at 4 p.m. daily.
New franchisees are bringing Play It Again Sports back to Sioux Falls. It will be at 2520 W. 41st St. and will feature used sports equipment along with some new. The store is expected to open in late fall or early winter.
Yummy Crab has opened at 4224 W. Empire Place in the space that used to be Fazoli’s. The restaurant’s menu features seafood by the pound or half-pound, including king crab, snow crab legs, Dungeness crab, shrimp, crawfish, clams and mussels, along with other fried seafood options. There are seven other locations in the U.S. and one in Canada. It’s open daily.
Locally owned MK Threads Boutique is moving across the street from 222 S. Phillips Ave. to 217 S. Phillips Ave., the former Home Porch space. The plan is to be in the new space by July 1.
Longtime Sioux Falls-based family-owned business Henry Carlson Construction is expected to be acquired by JE Dunn Construction, the nation’s eighth-largest general building contractor. The two companies have signed a letter of intent and are working toward a transaction closing by July 31. Kansas City-based JE Dunn is a family- and employee-owned company and has 26 offices nationwide.
As Breaking Burrito celebrates its 10th anniversary as a food truck, its first restaurant has opened in Harrisburg. The new building is at 480 Prairieside Trail between Kwik Star and Sanford Clinic. It’s open daily, features an expanded menu and also serves breakfast on the weekend. Owner Carlos Salgado will continue to operate his two Breaking Burrito trucks and the Mr. Churro truck, which sells churros and ice cream.
A new mobile coffee shop has joined the local food truck scene. Stephanie Dougherty has started Latte on the Loose. In addition to espresso drinks, Latte on the Loose serves drip coffee, matcha and other teas. It can be booked for public and private events.
Union Pizza & Smash has opened in the former Boss’ Pizza & Chicken space at 2111 S. Minnesota Ave., and The Pinball Room there has reopened. In addition to pizza, the menu features slider-sized smashburgers, sandwiches, salads, wings and appetizers. It’s open daily for lunch and dinner.
Unity Rd. has reopened its medical cannabis dispensary in Harford. “After a temporary closure and transition period, the dispensary is open under new operational leadership with a focus on consistency, patient education, product quality and accessibility,” the business said in a news release. It’s open daily at 404 Opal Lane. Unity Rd. closed in December 2024, citing challenges faced by the industry in South Dakota. The Hartford Connection, which sold alternative health products, also closed then and has not reopened.
