Play It Again Sports will return to Sioux Falls

June 15, 2026

Six years after closing its Sioux Falls store, Play It Again Sports is coming back.

This time, it will be franchised locally by Travis and Kristen Rhoades, who also are the local franchisees for Scooter’s Coffee.

“My wife and I seemed to keep overhearing parents mention they wished Play It Again was still in Sioux Falls, and we felt the same,” Travis Rhoades said.

“So we decided to look into the idea and discovered the franchise was actually available for the market, so we decided to pursue it.”

Their two sons, 11 and 14, between them play baseball, basketball, pickleball and golf, and run cross country and track.

“With the continuing growth of Sioux Falls and youth sports in general, there seems to be a good market for used sporting goods,” Rhoades said.

“It can lower the cost of entry for families into a sport and is also a nice way to get more life out of equipment that would otherwise be sitting in a garage or storage closet.”

The store closed in 2020 and used to be on South Western Avenue. It will reopen at 2520 W. 41st St. in a nearly 4,000-square-foot space within a building that used to house a UPS Store location.

“We really wanted to be on 41st Street and near other retail,” Rhoades said. “The visibility is great with its proximity to the road.”

The space is “a perfect location for Play It Again Sports,” said Ryan Tysdal of Tysdal Commercial, who represented Play It Again Sports. “National retail co-tenancy was important, especially having close proximity to other sporting goods retailers.”

The area also draws regional traffic, with more than 22,000 vehicles per day, he said.

“41st Street is such a retail powerhouse,” Tysdal added. “This pocket of Sioux Falls attracts a lot of out-of-town shoppers. Being in a location convenient for visitors to the city was a plus.”

The Rhoades family opened their first Scooter’s location in mid-2013 and have grown to 16 locations, with 10 in Sioux Falls and others in Madison, Brookings, Vermillion, Tea, Brandon and Harrisburg.

Their franchise agreement with Play It Again Sports is only for the Sioux Falls market.

The store will carry both used sports equipment and some new. The hope is to begin purchasing used equipment this fall, a process that typically lasts eight to 10 weeks for a new location before opening.

“It’s called an ‘open to buy’ period, and we won’t be able to sell anything during that time,” Rhoades said. “Once we have enough to fill the shelves of the store, we will fully open and begin selling equipment.”

Hiring has started for a full-time general manager.
