Restaurant Roundup: Taco festival, BOGO breakfast

Aug. 15, 2024

The traveling Tacos and Tequila Festival is coming to Sioux Falls on Saturday. In addition to food and drink, the event will include live performances from hip-hop artists, including Lil Jon, Ginuwine, Chingy, Ying Yang Twins, Petey Pablo, Twista, Mike Jones and DJ Ashton Martin. Other fun includes a chihuahua beauty pageant and lucha libre wrestling.  Hours are 2 to 11 p.m. at The Birdcage, home of the Sioux Falls Canaries. General admission tickets are $119. Find updates on Facebook.

Crooked Pint Ale House is offering a BOGO breakfast special Saturday and Sunday for dine-in meals. Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Oh My Cupcakes is celebrating its 15th anniversary Wednesday with specials at both locations. Random customers will receive their cupcakes for free, some of the original flavors will reappear in the cases and samples of new treats will be available. Two stations will be set up. For $6, customers can decorate their own cupcake, and for $10, they can create a sprinkle blend to take home. The bakery also is offering a dozen mini cupcakes for $15. Each mini dozen will include a random assortment of top flavors. There are no limits to how many you can order, but you must do it in advance for pickup or delivery that day. Call either location, or order online at ohmycupcakes.com/packages.

If you couldn’t make it to the fair, Boki Gelato and Cafe in The Empire Mall has an expanded food menu with midway favorites like funnel cakes, corn dogs, kettle corn and deep-fried Oreos and cheesecake. Owner Borjan Jaksic also operates Boki Concessions with nine food stands and four mini lemonade stands at state and county fairs, so it made sense to bring those menu items to the mall, he said.

On the Rocks in Valley Springs is closing Aug. 23. Owners Robert Pralguske and his son, Jonathon, decided not to renew the lease for the bar, casino and convenience store they opened in 2021. Pralguske cited rising costs but noted that they might look for an opportunity in another town. For the final party, there will be live music beginning at 5 p.m., free Jungle Juice and $2 cans of beverages. The upcoming closure means that Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse, which operated the bar’s kitchen, will be left with just its Sioux Falls location. Owner Randy Ragatz expanded here in May, taking over the kitchen at The Gaslight Saloon.

Customers with to-go or call-ahead orders and grab-and-go or take-and-bake purchases at Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery can skip the ordering line with a new checkout area.

If you’re a food truck fan, Saturday is your chance to try the new Canton-based Sunny’s Eat Place in Sioux Falls. The trailer will at the Huether Family Match Pointe at the Sanford Sports Complex from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a pickleball tournament.

Here are the August food and drink specials at Tailgators Grill & Bar in Brandon.

Squealer’s Smoke Shack in Tea is having its annual parents-only, back-to-school party starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. There will be “games, beverages and no kids.”

In Harrisburg, B&G Milkyway is celebrating the first day of school on Tuesday by donating 20 percent of sales from 5 p.m. to closing time to Harrisburg Liberty PTO.

This year’s addition to the Sioux Falls Wall of Notability mural at Sunny’s Pizzeria is WNBA coach Nate Tibbetts. Artist Wyatt Dickson began adding the Phoenix Mercury coach to the mural last weekend during the annual Bazaart market in the restaurant’s parking lot. Tibbets is a graduate of Roosevelt High School and USD and a former coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Jimmy John’s is offering a new meal deal with an 8-inch original sandwich, chips, a drink and dessert for $10. It’s available at participating restaurants.

Dairy Queen has a $7 meal deal with a bacon cheeseburger, fries, drink and ice cream for a limited time.

KFC has three new sauces for its nuggets: mango habanero, honey garlic and chipotle ranch.

Cheesy breakfast melts are back on the menu at Burger King for a limited time. All have egg and cheese, and meat options include ham, bacon or sausage.
