Xcel: Hundreds are still working to restore power

Sept. 12, 2019

Xcel Energy estimates almost 500 crew members and staff are working to restore power to businesses and residents still without electricity after Tuesday’s storm.

In a statement, the utility company estimated 2,200 customers are  without service.

Xcel’s online outage map shows outages throughout the city, with the biggest concentration between Grange and Kiwanis avenues north of 41st Street.

The storm also damaged more than 60 electric poles and caused other damage to the electric system.

“Our teams are out in full force today to join the recovery effort happening across the Sioux Falls area,” said Eric Pauli, community relations manager for Xcel Energy, South Dakota. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as our employees work to quickly and safely restore power. With the extensive damage in town, restoring service to all our customers will take time, but crews are making good progress.”

The three EF-2 tornadoes and strong winds knocked down trees and power lines throughout Sioux Falls, causing more than 26,000 customers to lose service. Xcel Energy called in crews from throughout the Upper Midwest to assist with restoration. The company said it expects to have an estimate later today of when all customers who can receive service will be restored.

“We also ask that drivers and pedestrians give our workers enough room to work while restoring power,” Pauli said. “Much of the damage is along roadsides, and we ask for assistance in keeping our workers safe as they restore power.”
