This Saturday, March 29, marks the 88th day of 2025 — leading to a first-of-its-kind event: Unleaded 88 Day.

UNL88 Day is a partnership between the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and Kwik Star to promote the use of ethanol-blended fuel across eastern South Dakota.

What does that mean for you? The chance to fill up the tank at prices not seen in years.

Between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, South Dakota’s 11 Kwik Star locations will be selling Unleaded 88 at $1.88 per gallon.

A money-friendly blend with up to 15 percent ethanol, UNL88 fuel is approved for all cars 2001 and newer — and American drivers already have logged more than 100 billion miles on it, according to Growth Energy.

“UNL88 Day is a great opportunity for our eastern South Dakota customers to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of UNL88 fuel and also get a great deal, today and every day, while they’re filling up their tank,” said Mark Meisner, vice president of marketing at Kwik Trip/Kwik Star.

“We are excited to invite both our longtime and soon-to-be first-time customers out to any of our 11 South Dakota locations to get a great deal and celebrate UNL88 Day with us.”

UNL88 Day highlights the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and Kwik Star’s shared commitment to increasing usage of ethanol-blended fuels. This event is part of the two organizations’ larger partnership to educate area drivers on the benefits of Unleaded 88.

“Through our partnership with Kwik Star, we are passing on cost savings to area drivers, and UNL88 Day emphasizes our commitment to promoting ethanol-blended fuels,” said Amanda Bechen, senior director of marketing and communications at South Dakota Corn. “When a driver chooses Unleaded 88 at the pump, all South Dakotans benefit.”

The South Dakota Corn Utilization Council is responsible for the collection and administration of a 1-cent-per-bushel corn checkoff program. Money raised through that program funds research and development of new uses and markets for corn and corn byproducts that benefit South Dakota corn growers.

Kwik Trip began in 1965, and Kwik Star joined the Kwik Trip brand in 1993. Kwik Trip/Kwik Star is a family-owned company that serves 11 million customers each week with convenient, clean retail stores.
