Sioux Falls native lands new position to ‘change the conversation’ with clients

Nov. 5, 2019

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Anna Stritecky, client communication coordinator at Marsh & McLennan Agency.

Name: Anna Stritecky

Age: 22

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I always make the joke that Sioux Falls can’t get rid of me. I was born and raised in the McKennan Park area, made my way through the the Sioux Falls public school system and graduated from Augustana University in May.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

The people. In college, I was trying to find an internship for the summer, and one night I got so frustrated with the process I emailed the mayor wondering if he could point me in the right direction. He replied — and offered to be a reference — within 24 hours. I could pull these stories out for days, but from my parents who built their careers here to people I’ve never spoken a word to, there’s an endless community that wants to see me succeed.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?:

It’s a brand-new position, and the leadership team in the office has given me courageous and total freedom to let me pave my own way. I was hired to try and “change the conversation” with our clients, and working for a company that puts trust in what a new college grad thinks says a lot about how this office is innovative and constantly evolving.

How did you get connected to your industry?

Graduating with a government/journalism/philosophy degree is difficult when there’s no career-path-clarity. I remember telling my parents at dinner one night that I wanted to find a company first and a job second, so I started looking at Sioux Falls businesses that I believed in and wanted to be a part of. Once I found this company, I honed in on my skills that’d make me an asset to the team.

Describe Marsh & McLennan Agency three words:

Futuristic. Inclusive. Leaders.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I’m such a sucker for downtown small businesses. Whether it be joining their downtown cleanups on Saturday mornings to shopping local, I always want to be an ally for the local economic growth.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Lime, the electric scooter ride-share! I usually walk to work, but I know that if my co-workers saw me pull up on a Lime they’d be reaffirmed in their choice of bringing me on the team.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I’ve always leaned towards working in development — whether that be in content development, economic development, leadership development, etc. Right now, I’m 50 percent of the business development department in my office, so I’d like to think the other 50 percent would be sad to see me go, so I don’t plan to depart anytime soon. Even if I do, I know if I’m having a similar experience to what I’ve had since being at MMA, I’ll be just fine.
