Sioux Falls building permits keep smashing records

Sept. 1, 2021

With nearly $725 million in building permits so far this year, the billion-dollar mark appears solidly in reach for Sioux Falls.

Through August, permits totaled $724.8 million, up from $410.2 million during the same time last year and $488.5 million in 2019.

While all categories of construction are up, commercial activity is leading the way.

The city has issued $300.5 million in new commercial construction permits through August, compared with $135.2 million last year and $179.3 million in 2019.

Commercial additions and remodeling projects also are well ahead of previous years at $160.1 million, double last year’s $75 million.

Major projects that were issued permits in August include:

  • The Crimson, a mixed use office/apartment building near 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue, $13 million.
  • West Pointe Commons apartments at 7700 S. Townsley Ave., $6.5 million.
  • Kids R Kids Learning Academy, near 85th and Western Avenue, $4.1 million.
  • Harvest Church, 6101 S. Bahnson Ave., $3.2 million.

New residential construction at $217.1 million is ahead of last year’s $156.5 million. Permits have been issued for 638 single-family homes, nearly 200 more than the 446 at this time last year and the 434 at the same time in 2019.

The city has issued permits for 1,479 new multifamily units, up from 578 for the same time in 2020.
