Scandinavian Designs has opened its first South Dakota store in the former Toys R Us building on the campus of The Empire Mall.

The retailer specializes in pieces that it says reflect its love for Nordic culture, modern design and quality craftsmanship.

The 30,000-square-foot store includes a blend of contemporary, midcentury modern and rustic pieces for all rooms in the home, as well as some office and outdoor furniture.

Scandinavian Designs is a California-based family business that started more than 50 years ago and has 30 showrooms. It started as a one-man operation after its founder went to a furniture show in his native Norway and several small factories agreed to give him credit.

“We are very excited to be expanding Scandinavian Designs by joining The Empire Mall community and sharing our modern contemporary home furnishings with the people of Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas,” said Katherine Haliski, head of stores for Scandinavian Designs. “With our decades of experience, expertise and passion for modern affordable furniture, we feel we bring something unique to the area.”

The retailer moved into several former Toys R Us stores nationwide after that company went bankrupt. The Sioux Falls store is still hiring for some positions.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Grand-opening events will be announced in the next few weeks.
