Sanford Health has opened a new two-story addition to the Van Demark Building on the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center.

The third and fourth floor additions total 36,550 square feet. The third floor include the sports medicine department, with 20 exam rooms, two X-ray rooms and five cast rooms.

There’s also designated space for research trials, orthobiologics and a 3D printer.

“Prior to this project, our sports medicine department was located in different parts of the building. Now, the entire sports medicine department is on the third floor, which makes the entire building easier to navigate for patients,” said Julie Wetering, director of orthopedics and sports medicine.

The fourth floor is shell space for future growth.

The Sanford Orthopedic Fast Track clinic also was moved to the ground floor from the lower level, making it more accessible to patients.

“Technology and research in orthopedics are advancing quickly,” Wetering said. “We are excited to have space to grow in this building as the industry grows, so we are able to continue providing exceptional care to our patients through the latest technology and top talent.”

The expanded Van Demark Building will complement the future Sanford Orthopedic Hospital nearby once it opens in a few years, she added.

“The expansion has increased our clinic space to allow for growth of our orthopedic department and improved patient access and service,” Wetering said. “We do outpatient procedures, X-rays, MRIs and physical therapy in the Van Demark Building, and all of those service areas were able to decompress a bit due to the expansion.”
