Sanaa’s to host fundraiser lunch Saturday for earthquake victims

Feb. 17, 2023

A downtown restaurant owner who was born in Syria is hosting a fundraiser Saturday to help victims of earthquakes this month in her homeland, Turkey and Lebanon.

Sanaa Abourezk is donating the entire proceeds from Saturday’s Mediterranean lunch buffet at Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet to World Central Kitchen and the Syrian American Medical Society.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the restaurant in the 8th & Railroad Center at 401 E. Eighth St.

Throughout the years, Abourezk has held several fundraisers for world disasters and local organizations that feed those in need.

“I’m sure most of you know that this means a lot to me,” she said Thursday night in a post on social media. “You always came and donated more than I expected. Unfortunately, this time I’m raising money to my birth country. My family still live in Syria, but it doesn’t matter. It’s all people who are hurt by the earthquake need our help in Syria and Turkey.”

Abourezk’s family members were safe, she told Dakota News Now.

If people can’t make it to Saturday’s lunch, she encourages them to donate online to the many organizations raising money for earthquake relief.

Sanaa Abourezk named James Beard Award semifinalist
