Expanded Sunshine Foods, Lewis Drug open in Canton

Oct. 30, 2024

Sunshine Foods and Lewis Drug are offering customers extra space and expanded inventory in Canton.

The businesses have expanded into 8,800 square feet contiguous with the existing building at 715 E. Fifth St. Part of that is the former Pizza Ranch, which closed in May, and the rest was vacant space.

“We expanded our selection of produce and grocery, we added a full line of wine and spirits, we added a beer cave, and we expanded our dairy,” said Darin Hill, manager of Sunshine Foods.

“It was an opportunity, plus we had a lot of areas here we needed to expand but just did not have the space to do it.”

For Lewis Drug, adding a drive-thru window was a key reason for expanding, CEO Mark Griffin said.

“We increased our inventory levels, but most importantly our drive-thru lends a whole new element to the success of the operation,” he said. “People want and expect drive-thrus, and we like to provide everything they want and need. We have a great relationship with Sunshine and have for a couple decades now.”

From Griffin’s perspective, “the communities around Sioux Falls, peripheral communities, seem to be very popular and growing,” he said. ” We want our store operation and Sunshine’s operation to be part of that.”

The Canton community “has a lot going for it,” Hill agreed.

“Canton’s a great community … (with a) new housing addition, new pool open this spring, a thriving downtown business atmosphere, so we’re excited,” he said, adding that plans for more residential development are encouraging.

“That’s the hope and dream is that the population of Canton does continue to grow, but we just want to be ahead of the game.”
