Restaurant Roundup: Free cake, throwback ‘sandwich,’ new waffle bar, wine & cookies

In celebration of Oreo’s 111th birthday, Nothing Bundt Cakes is giving away a free Oreo Cookies & Creams Bundlet to the first 111 guests beginning at 1:11 p.m. Monday. It’s the featured flavor.


After a decade, the bun-less Double Down sandwich will be back on the menu at KFC for a limited time. It’s bacon, cheese and sauce held between two pieces of fried chicken. Get it starting Monday for a month.

Yakkity Yak Coffee Shack is offering a make-your-own waffle bar every Saturday, beginning this weekend. Hours are 8 to 11 a.m. Several toppings will be available. The coffee shop is in All American Gymnastics Academy, which has classes and some open gym time on Saturday.

Girl Scout Cookies and wine? Cellar 54 is offering a pairing of six cookies and wines for $20 at 5:30 p.m. March 9. Two Girl Scouts also will be there selling cookies. Message the shop on Facebook to reserve a spot.

Mardi Gras specials are available through March 9 at Blarney Stone Pub. Offerings include a Cajun Ranch Chicken Salad or Wrap, Cajun Chicken n’ Shrimp, Etouffee and Cajun Cod. For dessert, try a classic Cajun/French treat with a twist. Croissant Beignets are sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with Jameson Irish Whiskey Sauce.

Last week, we told you about the Oklahoma smash burger at Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen. It’s gone already, replaced in the new month by the Oaxaca Burger. It features beef from Dakota Grasslands, Oaxaca cheese, taqueria pickles, refried beans and guacamole crema, all on a brioche bun from Look’s Bakehouse. Also new: Irish Pulled Pork and Bulgogi Cheesesteak.

Pizza Cheeks has a new meatball sub and three new house pies. The sub has housemade pork and beef meatballs, a schmear of Caesar dressing, the house red sauce, mozzarella, pecorino and basil on a soft hoagie from Look’s Bakehouse. For pizzas, the Tropical Boogie has alfredo sauce, Canadian bacon, pineapple, jalapenos and hot honey. Starring Tim Curry has red curry sauce, fresh and dry mozzarella, roasted mushrooms, bell peppers, “blitzed” almonds, cilantro and scallions. There’s also a traditional Margherita pie.

Sickies Garage has several new menu items, including a trio of mashed potato bowls. There are crispy chicken and poutine versions and the Super B with Kickin’ Bourbon Glazed Bacon, chopped brisket and Crispy Onion Tanglers. The Kickin’ Bourbon Bacon shows up with fried chicken and Crispy Onion Tanglers on housemade mac-and-cheese waffles. For appetizers, the new Spare Parts combo features fried cheese curds, fried jalapenos, fried pickles, Crunchy Onion Tanglers and spicy ranch sauce for dipping.

Here’s the new March Tasting Menu for Chef Lance’s on Phillips with Phyllo Trio for the starter, Cowboy Sirloin for the main course and Irish Cream Martini for dessert.

R Wine Bar & Kitchen’s new monthly features are caponata, carbonara and elderberry creme brulee.

The newest quarterly menu of cupcake flavors has arrived at Oh My Cupcakes. Every day through May 31, customers will find The Bunny Hop, Caramel by the Sea, Cookie Cutter, Cookies and Cream Cheesecake, Fluffernutter, Peppermint Flip, Strawberry Fields and Vanilla-Almond Lemon. Shamrock Mint is here for March only. The usual standards like Lemon Drop and Pleasantville are available year-round. Several dietary options are available for some of the flavors.

Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe is offering half-priced breakfast items through Wednesday. Breakfast items are served from 7:30 to 11 a.m. For online orders, use the code 50%BREAKFAST.

Poppy’s Popcorn Co. is bringing back savory flavors from years past. Every month will feature a different flavor at reduced prices for all sizes. Up first: Cheese Pizza. It’s pizza-flavored popcorn mixed with the usual yellow cheddar cheese.

CNC Food Factory has started delivering its baked goods to Zooks Coffee Bar in Tea. Customers will find jumbo muffins, including a gluten-free version, and protein bars.

Salas Salsas and Songbird Kombucha are pairing up for a tamales and kombucha pop-up at Songbird from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Pre-order tickets at salas-salsas.com  to secure a plate and pour. Tickets are $20 and include three tamales and a 16-ounce beverage.

The seventh annual Downtown Mash Madness has kicked off. Visit downtown breweries to taste their special offerings and vote until March 31. Here’s the lineup: Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars, Pineapple HWhip, a fruited sour; Fernson Downtown, Island Hopper Hazy IPA; Remedy Brewing Co., Formula Hank, a Hazy Double IPA; Severance Brewing Co., Exotic Fruit Octopus, a kettle sour ale; and WoodGrain Brewing Co., DDH Radio Static Pale Ale. Lupulin Brewing Co.’s annual Big Beer Week kicks off Sunday and runs until March 12. Find new releases every day – 26 total – including an exclusive for the Sioux Falls location: a maple bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout. Find all the offerings here. Get a punch card on your first visit, show up four days, and earn the four-day T-shirt. Come every day, and get the “always-coveted, badge of honor, bragging-rights-enabled” eight-day T-shirt. If you’re stuck trying to pick a margarita flavor, La Plaza Fiesta has you covered with a flight of three blended drinks. Side note: They are malt-beverage based and not tequila. Get three 7-ounce drinks for $13. Flavors include lime, strawberry, mango, peach, raspberry and Blue Hawaian.

Margarita Mondays are new at 212 Degrees The Boiling Point in Brandon. House margaritas are half-price from 3 p.m. to close, and a new specialty flavor – on the rocks or blended — is featured every week for $5. Buy a specialty one, and get entered in a monthly drawing for a taco-night basket to take home for your own party. Monday night tacos are $3 with a choice of shredded beef or chicken. Chips, salsa and queso also are available.

Chili’s Grill & Bar is celebrating Marg Madness with favorites and a new flavor: the Henny Rita with Hennessy. The monthly margarita is the Jameson Rita, which is $6 all day every day. The Straw-Eddy Rita and Sangria Rita are $6 during happy hour, which is 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays and all day on the weekend.

Changes in hours, service

  • The Combine in Garretson is open for lunch now. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
  • Oppa Chicken will be closed every Tuesday beginning next week.
  • Severance Brewing Co. is “just going to pretend for now” and has shifted out of winter hours. It’s open now from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, 2 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • MB Coffee & Grill will closed from Sunday through April 10.
  • Phnom Penh will be closed for renovations March 12-20.
